Keeping this in mind, I would like to introduce you to some of the most spectacular national parks in California that are essential visits.

Yosemite National Park was an awe-inspiring experience during my visit—it is a memory that remains vivid.
With its sharp rock formations, lush meadows, and gentle streams, Yosemite is recognized as one of the most dramatic national parks in California, which I am confident you will appreciate.
It’s important to note that ascents to locations such as Half Dome require caution; these can be strenuous endeavors. Be prepared and take your time. I found the halfway mark to be quite exhausting! Completing this hike undoubtedly merits respect.
This hike typically requires approximately 12 hours, so it is advisable to commence at dawn.
Additionally, don’t overlook bringing a minimum of 4 liters of water during your trek—a crucial requirement.
In the event you opt for the Half Dome hike, you will need to secure a permit from Yosemite National Park (which you can apply for here). The park has a limited allowance of hikers each day, hence early arrangements are advisable.

2.) Sequoia And Kings Canyon National Park

Upon your arrival, you will be greeted by the towering giant red sequoia trees (the largest trees on Earth) that populate the park, in addition to other notable attractions, such as Kings Canyon Byway offering breathtaking views, visiting General Sherman (the largest single-stem tree), and hiking towards Moro Rock, where you will be rewarded with spectacular sightlines of one of the most beautiful national parks in California.
If you choose to explore Kings Canyon, do not miss the opportunity to visit Rae Lakes, witness California’s second-largest mountain (Mount Williamson), and take in the breathtaking views of the Palisades.

For those interested in hiking, the Hidden Valley area offers trails that are generally easy to navigate, resulting in a nearly transcendent experience.
4.) Redwood National and State Parks
Redwood National and State Parks consist of multiple parks that span the California coastline.
Located approximately five hours north of San Francisco, this destination seamlessly blends urban and natural experiences, which is particularly favorable for travelers seeking a balance.
Once there, you will find a combination of temperate rainforest, towering redwood trees, and the serene Pacific Ocean, forming a beautiful backdrop. Exploring Redwood National and State Parks could take weeks, yet there are several must-visit sites.
Start by visiting Fern Canyon, embark on the Damnation Creek trail, admire Prairie Creek Redwoods, and explore Trinidad State Beach.
Your experience will undoubtedly be fulfilling.
5.) Death Valley National Park
My initial journey to Death Valley, when I was eleven years old, filled me with a sense of trepidation due to its ominous name.
Fear not; the name is more daunting than the reality.
The park is easily accessible if you are coming from Las Vegas (Nevada) or a bit further from locations like Los Angeles.
Though it may be dry, Death Valley ranks among the most fascinating (or should I say hottest) national parks in California. While there, don’t forget to visit Badwater Basin, Zabriskie Point, and the Ubehebe Crater.
Each of these sites offers stunning landscapes to explore on foot, but ensure you are well-protected with high SPF sunscreen and carry sufficient water with you. On my first visit, the park ranger denied us entry due to inadequate water supplies in our vehicle.
This region is exceptionally hot, and it consistently ranks as one of the hottest and driest locations in the United States.
6.) Point Reyes National Park
Point Reyes National Park, situated along the northern California coastline, offers stunning vistas overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This region features rugged cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and rolling hills that collectively create spectacular landscapes.
For those seeking activities, opportunities for seal watching, kayaking, and hiking abound. Notably, the park’s proximity to Big Sur serves as an added advantage; iconic landmarks such as McWay Falls and Bixby Bridge are certainly worth visiting.
This allows for a convenient combination of both Big Sur and Point Reyes during a single trip.
Moreover, ensure that you visit Point Reyes Headlands, which is renowned as an ideal location for witnessing the annual migration of grey whales, typically observable from January to April each year.
7.) Channel Islands National Park
Channel Islands National Park is located off the California coast, not far from Los Angeles.
As this national park comprises islands, access is only granted via boat, or through wealthy companions who own boats or private aircraft!
Nevertheless, it is a misconception to believe that a visit to Channel Islands National Park demands a significant expenditure, as many day trip options are available that allow for an affordable experience.
It is essential to note that all motorized transport is prohibited on the islands, obliging visitors to traverse the five islands on foot. While here, you can engage in exciting activities such as snorkeling, surfing, hiking, and kayaking.
If you intend to stay for several days, be sure to watch the unforgettable sunrises from Inspiration Point on Anacapa Island; it is truly a delightful experience!
8.) Pinnacles National Park
Pinnacles National Park is located just east of Salinas Valley, approximately two hours from Big Sur. The park represents remnants of volcanic activity that occurred roughly 23 million years ago (give or take a few years).
Upon arrival, it is recommended that you explore the Condor Gulch Trail, see Machete Ridge, and visit Bear Gulch Reservoir, all of which offer breathtaking scenery and often a quieter atmosphere compared to more popular parks like Yosemite.
