After spending several nights in Basseterre, the capital city of St Kitts, it became apparent that we had not adequately explored the city. Our time was primarily spent engaging in various activities around the island, limiting our exposure to the city’s attractions.
To rectify this, we embarked on a tour of the city.
Basseterre serves as the primary docking point for cruise ships, leading to a diverse mixture of visitors and locals seamlessly blending into the urban environment.
We commenced our journey at the central clock, subsequently proceeding to Independence Square.
Generously referred to in the present, this area was once a site of the African slave trade. Observing certain buildings, one can identify small barred windows that served as holding cells for slaves until market day, during which they were auctioned off at Pall Mall Square, now known as Independence Square post-independence.
Across Independence Square is the magnificent Immaculate Conception Catholic Cathedral, definitely worth a visit while in the area.
Our next stop was the Gallery Café, an excellent location not only for enjoying a delicious cup of coffee and pastries but also for exploring and potentially purchasing local artwork.
As we continued our exploration of the city, we took brief stops to appreciate charming churches and unobtrusive streets, as well as to enjoy refreshing beverages from the Caribbean sun.
For lunch, we enjoyed a hearty meal at El Fredos, accompanied by a refreshing rum punch.
Subsequently, we prepared to embark on an exhilarating ATV tour, traversing the island and immersing ourselves in the breathtaking rainforest environment! Despite previously taking part in similar activities, a touch of nervous anticipation accompanied my enthusiasm for an exciting adventure.
The tour commenced on smooth pathways, gradually escalating into more rugged terrain, which was undeniably exhilarating. Navigating challenging roads proved to be an engaging experience, with the presence of our guide enhancing our safety and enjoyment during this adventure.
Upon concluding the ATV adventure, we returned to our accommodation at the Marriott Hotel, a renowned establishment central to the development of tourism on the islands. The hotel offered easy access to stunning beaches, which I leisurely enjoyed during the evening while taking in the picturesque views before unwinding at the pool with cocktails and delightful refreshments.
We concluded our evening at the Carambola Beach Club, an inviting locale ideal for enjoying cocktails by the ocean and potentially dining on exquisite meals amidst a scenic backdrop.
Dinner was a delightful culmination of our day. The portion sizes of the lobster, while slightly less than expected compared to St Kitts’ renowned lobsters, still provided a satisfying experience, complemented by delicious offerings.
With an exceptional dining experience behind us, we retired for the evening, eager for further explorations of the island.
