A first time trip to Italy is pretty exciting and totally incredible; that’s a given. Though, with so many of the best places in Italy to visit on a first trip, it can get pretty overwhelming when you’re in that planning stage.
From the gorgeous towns of Southern Italy (yes, I am naming you; Matera), cities like Florence and Naples, the Amalfi Coast to Cinque Terre, you’re going to be spoiled with numerous choices on places in Italy to visit.
Italy is a country steeped in history, culture, and a plethora of delicious pasta and the best gelato spots on every street (trust me on the latter). If you’re not returning to your hotel in a pasta-induced haze, you’re not experiencing Italy correctly!
Whether you’re seeking more iconic locations or somewhere a little less mainstream, you’ll encounter ample options when organizing your journey to Italy.
With that in mind, I wanted to highlight some of the best places in Italy to visit on a first trip. To simplify matters, we have included some of the must-visit locations throughout Italy. This approach will ensure that regardless of which region you fly into, you will discover a few gems nearby.
Have the best time exploring Italy!
1.) Venice
Let’s commence with arguably the most renowned cities in Italy; Venice!
Venice is undoubtedly one of the best places in Italy to visit on a first-time trip. While it may be somewhat pricier compared to other destinations in Italy, it remains an essential experience.
Filled with stunning canals, the Doge’s Palace, and a vast array of historical sites and galleries, Venice has everything. Be prepared to get a little lost while navigating through the narrow alleys and waterways; they can be disorienting! Embrace the experience; you will encounter some remarkable new spots.
Oh, and try (if possible) to avoid the main thoroughfares for dining, as prices are often elevated. A short walk from the primary plazas and streets can lead you to the most delightful (and reasonably priced) restaurants, particularly for gelato!
2.) Pompeii
A once-thriving Roman city, Pompeii was utterly annihilated by a catastrophic eruption of its volatile neighbor, Mt. Vesuvius.
In modern times, this expansive archaeological and UNESCO World Heritage site is a must-visit location while traveling between the Amalfi Coast and Naples. It is exceedingly easy to visit.
If you are planning to explore Pompeii, allocate sufficient hours to meander through the entire site. To avoid large crowds, aim to arrive first thing in the morning; this location tends to fill quickly.
3.) Pisa
Pisa is a relatively small Italian city but an excellent location to visit for its iconic leaning tower. This marvel dates back almost 700 years and stands as one of the most recognizable attractions in all of Italy.
Additionally, you can combine a visit to Pisa with a trip to Florence and Cinque Terre. The relatively short train or car ride from Florence to Pisa makes this trip quite convenient.
Interestingly, it is rumored that the Leaning Tower began tilting even before its completion; those troublesome builders!
4.) Tuscany
If you wish to take a brief respite from the bustling city tours, consider visiting the rustic charm of the Tuscan Countryside.
We recently stayed on an organic blueberry farm and experienced the tranquility of a beautiful Tuscan farmhouse, offering a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of Tuscany away from city life. Pure bliss!
Additionally, you can plan a road trip around Tuscany and its neighboring regions, including cities such as Siena.
5.) Milan
Milan serves as the fashion capital and is among the best places in Italy for a first-time visitor (especially in the northern part of the country).
However, do not be misled; Milan offers much more than just fashion.
A first-time visit to Milan will unveil an extensive mix of impressive spots to discover, including the Milan Cathedral, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and the impressive yet formidable Sforza Castle.
Although the weather in Milan tends to be notorious for being unpredictable, do not forget to keep an umbrella handy!
6.) Palermo
Palermo is one of Italy’s southernmost cities and a fantastic destination to explore.
A visit to Sicily is incomplete without dedicating several days to discover the stunning architecture, art galleries, and vibrant markets that enhance the streets of Palermo.
For a rather unique and somewhat macabre experience, visit the Catacombe dei Cappuccini, where hundreds of mummified residents and nobles are on display. Both interesting and eerie!
7.) Matera
Matera is a city in southern Italy that boasts thousands of years of history! It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities globally.
This remarkable city is a place everyone should strive to visit once. Not only is it iconic, but it is also among the best locations in Italy for a first visit.
8.) Orvieto
Orvieto is arguably one of the most picturesque communes within Umbria, making it a must-visit destination and easily among the best places in Italy to experience while traveling by car.
This captivating town rests atop a volcanic tuff that rises out of the Italian landscape. Meander through its cobbled streets, enjoy a homemade gelato, and watch the sunset over the enchanting Umbrian countryside!
9.) San Miniato
This charming town consistently embodies the quintessential depiction of Italy, featuring beautiful architecture, lush countryside, and amiable locals.
San Miniato serves as an exquisite stop for those contemplating an Italian road trip and can be thoroughly explored in a few hours. It is a perfect pit stop between larger destinations or simply for a tranquil day of exploration.
10.) Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre stands as one of Italy’s most beautiful terrains. Composed of five primary towns, Cinque Terre is a stunning region to explore over several days.
Remaining in any of the five towns—or even just outside in a larger town—allows you to take the train or walk the coastal path connecting them all.
11.) Florence
Florence ranks as one of the first cities I ever visited in Italy and significantly influenced my admiration for this extraordinary nation (and not solely due to the gelato shops at every corner).
The captivating streets, stunning architecture, and the medieval Ponte Vecchio Bridge make this city one of the finest spots in Italy for a first-time visitor.
12.) Rome
Let’s not forget to visit the capital of Italy, Rome.
Explore the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Sistine Chapel, alongside hundreds of other beautiful sites; you’ll have ample choices. It is recommended to dedicate several days (a minimum of 4-5) in the city, as we spent five days and hardly managed to see a majority of the places we intended to visit!
