Recently, we enjoyed an exciting week in Iceland, filled with memorable moments.
This post marks the first segment of a two-part narrative focused on our travels in Iceland. The continuation of this documentation can be found here.
Upon arrival, we experienced surprisingly cold weather as we began our journey through heavy snow.
The snow-covered road painted a majestic picture; however, capturing the scene on camera proved challenging, as stopping was not feasible.
Nevertheless, we eagerly anticipated a delightful lunch, some traditional lava baking, and a rejuvenating session at the geothermal pools.
Where did we begin this culinary adventure?
Our first stop was Laugarvatn Fontana, an impressive location that I found enchanting from the start.
Upon entering, I was enveloped by a picturesque view and the enticing aroma of prepared meals.
After an early flight, we were particularly hungry, and the culinary offerings immediately captivated my attention.
Viktor, our gracious host for the afternoon, proposed that we first experience the unique process of baking bread using the natural geothermal heat.
Upon learning about this intriguing concept back in the UK, my interest was piqued, prompting me to follow him outside into the frigid Icelandic climate.
Then, Viktor began excavating the location of the rye bread, explaining the natural heat from the earth’s core creates perfect conditions for baking.
Within moments, he had unearthed the bread, which was delicately wrapped, showcasing how the geothermal activity allows for optimal baking temperatures.
Observe the steaming hole from which the bread was extracted—it’s actual volcanic heat that drives this unique culinary experience.
Indeed, Iceland epitomizes the phrase ‘land of fire and ice,’ with both elements coexisting concurrently.
Incredible!
Once the bread was sufficiently cooled in the natural spring water, we returned to the main building where all awaited its presentation.
Interestingly, I learned that suitable footwear is essential for navigating snowy terrains.
Despite previous reservations about acquiring them, my recent experiences in Iceland validated their necessity.
After only a brief period outdoors, I could feel the chill through my regular shoes; thus, when my companion suggested seeking appropriate snow boots, it became the highlight of our adventure.
Returning to the bread experience, we prepared to indulge in the freshly baked rye bread accompanied by local butter.
The result was exhilarating! The warm bread melting the butter created a delightful sensation, making it easily one of the finest rye breads I had tasted thus far.
Moreover, I found myself returning for more and indulging multiple times.
And this was all accomplished before we even began our lunch!
Our lunch variety was commendable, featuring a selection of both hot and cold dishes – all freshly prepared and delightful.
Additionally, there were various options for those with a penchant for sweets, such as myself.
The smoothies served were particularly delightful!

And here’s my selected plate!
During our meal, Viktor graciously presented us with another portion of the rye bread we cherished throughout our experience.
I was thrilled to take this home, and my fondness for this rye bread was clearly acknowledged by Viktor.
To be honest, the rye bread didn’t last long—everyone enjoyed it thoroughly once we departed from Laugarvatn Fontana.
With our lunch concluded, we ventured outside to explore the geothermal pools available.
The geothermal pools presented four temperature options, ranging from 32°C (90°F) to 40°C (104°F), providing a comfortable atmosphere for all visitors.
Thus, we embraced the cold once more, but this time, took a dip into the warm waters while admiring the stunning Icelandic scenery.
A rejuvenating ritual following our time in the heated pools was a refreshing dip in the river.
Indeed, the river is quite cold; nevertheless, embracing the opportunity to try something new, I opted to experience the brisk waters.
