A luxury resort offering spectacular ocean and volcano views on Nusa Lembongan, an idyllic beach hut on Nusa Ceningan, and an exclusive luxury villa in Canggu – follow Christina Macpherson’s inaugural journey to Bali and discover the reasons she was reluctant to depart.
Having never visited Bali prior, I must admit that my expectations were rather modest. When I enthusiastically informed friends of my destination, they regarded me with indifference, responding with a lackluster, “Oh?” I had encountered narratives about the overwhelming influx of tourism that had negatively impacted the country; I had been cautioned that the island’s inherent magic and natural simplicity had dissipated. However, my expectations were about to be pleasantly challenged.
Bali, in its authentic form, is breathtaking. The charm remains present in its secluded coves and pristine beaches, while tranquil areas exhibit some of the finest azure waters and vibrant greenery I have encountered. Nevertheless, what rendered Bali particularly enjoyable for me was the warmth of its inhabitants. The Balinese individuals we encountered during our journey were exceptionally friendly, accommodating, and deeply respectful of their cultural traditions, going above and beyond to ensure we felt a sense of belonging.
Thus, here is Bali – a fleeting visit, yet infinitely rewarding nonetheless.
DAY 1: Le Pirate Nusa Ceningan
After mistakenly arriving a day late, we were received at Le Pirate with heartfelt welcomes and a refreshingly potent glass of iced tea.
The accommodations at Le Pirate are efficiently designed, catering to their primary function – sleep (and other related activities that shall remain unmentioned).
Featuring a cascading pool that overlooks the gently lapping shores of Nusa Ceningan, along with a bar, restaurant, and buffet offerings, Le Pirate truly grasps the essence of travel and adventure. By providing compact lodgings, they foster social interaction, exploration, and the opportunity to savor the island’s offerings.
Day 2 & 3: Batu Karang Nusa Lembongan
Following a brief stroll across the iconic bridge connecting Ceningan to Lembongan, we were collected by a shuttle that traversed through the islands’ villages. We arrived with a sense of wonder and amazement.
Batu Karang epitomizes luxury. Its three separate pools, swim-up bar, exquisite dining establishments, and serene spa create an unparalleled retreat, marking a stark contrast from our previous experience at Le Pirate – not that it was unfavorable. We were welcomed as if we were long-lost friends and offered a refreshing coconut to counter the afternoon heat.
The personnel permitted us an early check-in, and even though it is technically a resort, I felt as if we were ensconced in our own private villa, separated from the outside world. The ‘rooms.’ which are almost as expansive as our entire residence, have obviously been meticulously designed with privacy and luxury in perspective.
The breakfast menu was an experience in itself – the variety of delectable options available was one of Batu Karang’s many favorable qualities. We swam, indulged in spa treatments, and while observing my partner surf from the comfortable seating at the in-house bar, I felt incredibly fortunate.
Day 4: La Lasa Villa
There is an undeniable charm associated with having your own private villa…
The staff at La Lasa were sincerely welcoming, the villa astonishingly spacious (the largest of all), and the individually delivered breakfast thoroughly enjoyable, which made it difficult for us to consider leaving. Truly, we were so enamored with our stay that we earnestly requested an extended night. Thankfully, we needn’t have resorted to dramatics; the amiable staff were more than happy to accommodate us, and I was particularly pleased to enjoy additional moments with the resident dog, Wifi.
La Lasa is conveniently located near popular attractions in Canggu, yet sufficiently distant to foster a sense of spacious openness within the community. My fondness for this place was undeniable; I appreciated our villa, the dedicated staff, and of course, Wifi the dog. I would certainly consider making this my regular accommodation when returning to Canggu.
