When The New York Times once described Scottsdale as “a desert version of Miami’s South Beach,” it overlooked the fact that the town is also recognized as “The West’s Most Western Town.” Scottsdale, measuring just 31 miles in length and 11 miles in width, manages to encompass a plethora of remarkable attractions, including parks, museums, shopping districts, and concert venues. Its population of 230,500 (as of 2014) actively engages with these offerings, inviting us to discover the vibrant activities available!

As a local resident of Arizona, I have had the pleasure of visiting Scottsdale several times, allowing me to explore both the city and its surroundings. Below is a compilation of attractions that I believe every visitor and resident in Scottsdale should experience:

1. McDowell Sonoran Preserve

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a vast, permanently safeguarded desert habitat that offers exceptional hiking opportunities for families. With an impressive variety of trails available, there are options suited for varying levels of skill and fitness. For instance, the Gateway Loop presents a more challenging rocky terrain, necessitating durable hiking boots and poles. This trail is particularly enjoyable for those seeking an adventure. Alternatively, Browns Ranch provides a more gentle experience, allowing visitors to appreciate the desert scenery without distraction. There is a wide array of trails available, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the beauty of the desert landscape.

2. McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

For families who appreciate mini-train rides, delightful park amenities, and model railroading, McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park is an essential destination. Enthusiasts of all ages will enjoy the expansive 15-inch gauge railroad, the Magma Arizona Railroad locomotive, alongside a railroad museum and numerous other attractions. The meticulously crafted dioramas feature various model train gauges complete with interactive elements that activate equipment, sounds, and lighting. The venue also includes an educational 3D movie titled “Flight of the Butterflies,” as well as interactive insect exhibits that are bound to capture children’s interest. As you stroll past local landmarks like the Little Red Schoolhouse, Cavalliere’s Blacksmith Shop, and Rusty Spur Saloon, a sense of nostalgia envelops you. Moreover, the area features inviting cafés where you can unwind and observe the vibrant atmosphere.

Old Town is ideal for those seeking tranquility. However, for those like myself who seek more excitement, the nightlife in Old Town Scottsdale offers a plethora of options. Upscale nightclubs and bars in the Entertainment District feature celebrity DJs and live music performances, ensuring a lively evening experience!

Attendees can view many iconic racing cars that have contributed to Penske Racing’s legacy, thereby enriching their knowledge of each vehicle’s history. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by the Miller Lite Dodge stock car, which Rusty Wallace drove to his 37th and final victory back in 2004—a sight every fan will appreciate.

In addition to Butterfly Wonderland, the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center (SWCC) is a noteworthy sanctuary in Scottsdale that deserves attention.

A visit to the SWCC offers a wonderful opportunity for children to learn about wildlife rescue. This facility is not structured as a zoo or animal park; rather, it serves as a sanctuary dedicated to the rehabilitation of wild animals that are abandoned, injured, or orphaned. Whenever feasible, the animals are treated and subsequently returned to their natural habitat; those unable to be released can live safely at the sanctuary. The program fosters interaction between the residents and the dedicated staff, who enthusiastically share their knowledge about conservation efforts. Contributions to the center are always welcomed.

9. MacDonald’s Ranch

Visitors can watch pizza being made while savoring delicious kale and bean soup.

Filled with cacti, desert trees, and vibrant succulents, this picturesque setting offers ample shaded paths and intriguing trails. This tranquil space serves as a perfect retreat for adults and an exciting area for children to explore. The garden conveys a valuable message via its large, rust-colored steel water vessel, symbolizing abundance in arid environments. Designed by landscape architect Christine Ten Eyck, this symbol is further complemented by the inscribed wisdom: “The frog does not drink up the pond in which he lives,” promoting thoughtful conservation efforts.
