As one of the least populated countries globally, Greenland may not readily come to mind as a destination; however, this perspective would overlook its vast array of remarkable attractions spread across the nation.
A distinguishing feature of Greenland is its unparalleled natural history. The landscape is unlike any other on the planet, offering surreal experiences during various expeditions or visits to local areas guided by knowledgeable residents from significant towns such as Nuuk or Ilulissat.
During our time in Greenland, we spent 11 days exploring its magnificence. Although fully experiencing the country is virtually impossible due to its vastness, it is indeed manageable to visit some of its top attractions during the summer months.
One potential hurdle for travelers may be navigating the region, yet this is less complex than it appears. Travelers have the option to board an expedition ship, like we did with Albatros Expeditions, or easily utilize domestic flights through Air Greenland and various domestic ferries that connect some of the most sought-after locations in Greenland.
To maximize your visit to Greenland, I will highlight several breathtaking locations that warrant exploration. This guide incorporates numerous natural wonders along with smaller towns and cities that can be readily visited during your trip.
If you have questions regarding your visit to Greenland, please do not hesitate to inquire. It is indeed a marvelous country to explore, and assistance is always available.
1.) Disko Bay (Eqip Sermia)
Disko Bay stands out as one of the most frequently visited destinations in Greenland, and justifiably so. This area, previously explored by Norse voyagers and Inuit populations, epitomizes the natural beauty that characterizes Greenland.
A prime spot within Greenland to visit is Eqip Sermia. The optimal method to appreciate it is through an excursion from Ilulissat or via a cruise. Eqip Sermia represents a massive glacier adjoining the Greenlandic Icecap.
While photographs may illustrate its grandeur, they fail to convey the visual impact of the hanging glacier towering over Disko Bay with its breathtaking scenery. It resembles a magnificent wall of ice. Our visit was fortuitously blessed with clear weather, which allowed us to fully absorb the pristine beauty surrounding Eqip Sermia. Nevertheless, it is prudent to never underestimate Greenlandic weather, as conditions can swiftly alter.
Here in Eqip Sermia, exploration typically requires a zodiac, especially for those wishing to navigate closer to small floating ice pieces in the water.
However, one should not get too close to the glacier, as it is prone to calving. During our visit of approximately three hours, we witnessed this occurrence at least fifteen times.
Due to the inherent dangers around Eqip Sermia’s waters, it is crucial to adhere to local guidelines and consider visiting with a certified guide or your expedition crew.
