The history of South Elgin dates back further, as it was connected to an interurban railway in the late 19th century.

This railway is the foundation of the renowned Fox River Trolley Museum, which operates vintage trolleys along a preserved section of the old railway.

South Elgin boasts a plethora of beautiful green spaces, both along the riverbanks and further east, where former farmland is transitioning back to prairie.

Two long-distance trails converge in South Elgin; the Fox River runs along for 40 miles, while the Illinois Prairie Path extends eastward all the way to the outskirts of Chicago at Forest Park.

1. Fox River Trolley Museum

At the onset of the 20th century, the small town of South Elgin was served by an interurban railway of the Elgin, Aurora and Southern Traction Company, which ran approximately 40 miles along the Fox River.

This system included urban streetcar segments in Elgin and Aurora, gaining popularity until it became outdated due to the rise of automobile travel in the 1920s and 1930s.

A portion of the line in South Elgin was preserved for freight, and ultimately, this section was transformed into a museum, having been re-electrified by a devoted team of volunteers.

The Fox River Trolley Museum features a collection of 30 antique trolleys, constructed between 1887 and 1959, with two being original to this line.

On Sundays, visitors can ride a historic trolley for four miles along the scenic valley to the Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve.

South Elgin offers ample opportunities to engage with the outdoors and enjoy scenic walks. Kenyon Farm, spanning 75 acres, belongs to the Forest Preserve District of Kane County and features wooded hillsides along the banks of a 25-acre pond surrounded by wetland vegetation.

Visitors can explore the woods and pond via unmarked trails. The preserve is situated in a rapidly developing section of town, surrounded by farmland and burgeoning residential neighborhoods. The Illinois Prairie Path lies just a couple of hundred yards to the east.

This eagerly anticipated one-day event occurs at SEBA Park at the beginning of October to celebrate the autumn season.

Organized by volunteers, the Pumpkin Patch Festival raises funds for the Parks and Recreation Departments South Elgin Foundation and is designed primarily for families and children.

Activities throughout the morning and afternoon include a petting zoo, hay pyramid, and a costume pet parade.

The pumpkins available at the patch are locally cultivated and donated by a farm on Barry Road, offering both full-size and miniature pumpkins. Additionally, there is a station for carving and painting the pumpkins.
