1. Cape Le Grand National Park
Situated on the eastern flank of Esperance, this park encompasses over 30,000 hectares of pristine sandy beaches, wild heathland, and dramatic granite landscapes.
Several attractions mentioned in this list are located within Cape Le Grand National Park, where you can access trails to ascend granite summits or traverse one of the most breathtaking coastlines along the Le Grand Coastal Trail.
The area is predominantly blanketed by heathland, home to pygmy possums and grey kangaroos that frequently venture down to the beaches.

2. Lucky Bay
While exploring the Southern Coast in 1802, explorer and cartographer Matthew Flinders (1774-1814) anchored HMS Investigator in this bay to seek shelter from a storm.
He subsequently named it Lucky Bay, where the ship’s botanist, Robert Brown, made landfall and cataloged several species new to science at that time.
Similar to Flinders’ observations, Lucky Bay remains a sheltered haven, adorned with the snow white sands and crystalline waters for which Esperance is renowned.
Opportunities for fishing, snorkeling, and surfing abound, while humpback and southern right whales swim nearby during the winter months.
If you arrive later in the day, it is not uncommon to share the sunset with the local kangaroo population.
3. Twilight Bay
Twilight Bay is an ideal choice for family beach outings in Esperance and is celebrated as one of the finest beaches in the country.
This beach encompasses all the signature features of Esperance’s coastline, including brilliant white sand, clear blue waters, and low heath-covered cliffs.
However, what truly distinguishes Twilight Bay are the granite reefs and outcrops at the western end, creating a natural aquatic playground with calm, crystal-clear waters and rocks for children to climb and jump from.
The environment is perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, and snorkeling, while the more vigorous waves on the eastern side are conducive to surfing.
During summer weekends, Twilight Bay is monitored by lifeguards and offers shower and restroom facilities.
4. Esperance Museum
This museum is emblazoned with a unique setting, situated within a historic old goods shed at Esperance’s former railway yard.
Under these ancient beams, one can delve into various aspects of Esperance’s history, including the town’s French heritage, the sinking of the bulk carrier Sanko Harvest in 1991, the town’s pioneers, and the establishment of the railway in the 1920s.
Key exhibits include a piano dating back to the 1820s, a lifeboat from the Sanko Harvest, and the restored locomotive W919. The museum also features an extensive display on NASA’s Skylab space station, which was launched in 1973 and fell to Earth near Esperance in 1979. 5. Great Ocean Drive
The Goldfields-Esperance Region is home to an abundance of stunning coastal landscapes.
To experience this, a 40-kilometer driving trail has been established to showcase the area’s finest sights.
The Great Ocean Drive commences in Esperance and extends westward along Twilight Beach Road, traversing cliff tops, granite outcrops, and some of the most beautiful beaches globally.
During the months of May to December, visitors can stop at designated lookouts to observe humpback or southern right whales.
The Great Ocean Drive features 23 recommended stops, offering hidden coves, wind-swept beaches, and magnificent wind farms harnessing the ocean breezes.
6. Middle Island & Pink Lake Hillier Scenic Flight
This 90-minute flight can be arranged through an online tour platform GetYourGuide.com and provides a spectacular view of Esperance and the incredible beauty found just offshore.
Departing from Esperance Airport, the flight heads towards the Recherche Archipelago, affording views of the expansive farmland surrounding the town and the pristine beaches along the coastline.
As you approach Middle Island, you will be enthralled by the unique pinkish hue of Lake Hillier located at its northeastern corner.
This characteristic coloration results from a type of green micro-algae prevalent in saline lakes.
7. Woody Island
You can enjoy a leisurely ferry ride to Woody Island, located 15 kilometers off Esperance within the Recherche Archipelago.
Recognized as a nature reserve and spanning 2.4 square kilometers, it is the sole island within the archipelago accessible to visitors.
During the ferry crossing, there is a chance to observe marine wildlife such as dolphins, seals, sea lions, and white-bellied sea eagles.

8. Frenchman Peak
Part of a series of prominent granite formations located in the southwestern region of Cape Le Grand National Park, Frenchman Peak presents a challenging yet rewarding hike for outdoor enthusiasts.
The name is derived from the peak’s resemblance to the hats worn by French soldiers in the 19th century, towering 262 meters above the park and offering panoramic views.
The trek to the summit along the eastern side is a strenuous three-kilometer round trip, taking approximately two hours to complete.
Near the summit lies a network of tunnels and caves, formed by wave action around 40 million years ago when sea levels were approximately 300 meters higher than today.
It is advisable to avoid the ascent during wet weather, as the steep slopes can become slippery.
9. West Beach

The deceptively large waves are popular amongst surfers, however, bathers may prefer the shallow waters created by a long sandbar, as the rip currents can be strong.

10. Observatory Point
An ideal location to stretch your legs along the Great Ocean Drive, Observatory Point features a wave-battered promontory capped with a lookout platform.
Ascend the stairway for a panoramic view that you will want to savor for quite some time.
Laid out before you is the captivating azure of the Southern Ocean, the lush green vegetation of the cliffs, and the imposing granite formations that stand resilient against the crashing waves.
On the horizon, the islands of the Recherche Archipelago can be seen, with Observatory Island being the nearest, separated from Observatory Point by a narrow strait.
11. Rotary Lookout
The summit of the prominent granite formation, Wireless Hill, serves as the highest point for several miles, offering exceptional views of the ocean, the Recherche Archipelago, the sandy beaches of Esperance, and the town itself.
A circular walking path meanders through the surrounding brush, guiding you to another viewpoint on the western side where you can gaze along West Beach.
An orientation table provides useful information to assist your navigation, and you can take a moment to observe the bulk carriers as they navigate in and out of the port just to the north.
12. Lucky Bay Brewing
A significant portion of the expansive agricultural land in Esperance’s hinterland is dedicated to barley, primarily exported for brewing purposes.
Lucky Bay Brewing sources premium quality barley directly from local farmers and has innovatively developed a brewing process that incorporates 75% raw barley.
Therefore, you can be assured of tasting a distinctly local product here.
In the standard offerings available as of 2020 were a Barley Pale Ale, a German-style Kölsch, a Blonde Ale, a Witbier, a Dark Ale, an IPA, a Farmhouse Ale, and “Lockdown,” a special Dark Ale created during the Covid-19 pandemic. For additional details, consider scheduling a tour of the brewery or visiting the taproom, open from Thursday to Sunday, which also serves its own pizzas.
13. Esperance Stonehenge
The world’s only full-size replica of Stonehenge was constructed in Esperance in the 2010s.
Crafted from the local pinkish granite instead of bluestone, the Esperance Stonehenge was designed to replicate the original layout as it appeared around 1950 BCE.
The 137 pieces of granite used in its assembly were all extracted from a quarry situated less than a kilometer from the site, arranged to align with the Solstices at this location.
Thus, on the morning of the Summer Solstice (22 December), the rising sun illuminates the Station Stones and the Altar Stone, and a similar alignment occurs in the opposite direction at sunset on the Winter Solstice (21 June).
14. Wharton Beach
For those willing to make the journey, another breathtaking beach awaits on the eastern side of Cape Le Grand National Park, approximately an hour’s drive from Esperance.
If located elsewhere in the world, Wharton Beach would draw throngs of visitors.
Instead, most of the traffic is comprised of locals from Esperance, and with three kilometers of immaculate white sand, you will find ample space for yourself.
The sand here is exceptionally fine, even by Esperance’s standards, producing a distinct squeaking sound underfoot.
This beach is sheltered from the open ocean within a crescent-shaped bay, enhancing the clarity of the water while still providing sufficient swell for surfers.
If you prefer not to return too soon, lodging is available at the Duke of Orleans Bay Caravan Park, adjacent to the beach.
15. Esperance Visitor Centre
A practical first stop, especially for newcomers, the Esperance Visitor Centre ensures a smooth trip.
Here, information regarding accommodation, transportation, and tours is readily available, and knowledgeable staff can provide travel guidance.
Additionally, the visitor center is located within the Esperance Museum Village, which preserves various historic buildings from the town’s past.
The site features a schoolhouse, a doctor’s office, and a courthouse, among others, repurposed as shops and galleries.
The Museum Village also hosts a bi-weekly market for fresh produce and artisan crafts, occurring on Sunday mornings.
