Few cities in the world can compare to North Bay Village. With a population of just over 8,000 residing on three small islands in Biscayne Bay, it possesses a unique charm.

This location is exceptionally suited for aquatic pursuits. From Pelican Harbor Marina, visitors can embark on kayaking excursions, rent motorboats, or speed away on jet skis to explore the wonders of the bay.

Every Wednesday, the city hosts a vibrant food truck rally, and a wildlife rescue center at the harbor organizes fulfilling nature cruises. North Bay Village boasts an outstanding location, conveniently situated between Miami Beach and Miami’s upscale Upper East Side.

Within minutes, one can reach the beach, explore farmers’ markets, enjoy innovative musical performances, or stroll along the recently resurfaced Beachwalk.

1. Water Activities from Pelican Harbor Marina

Located on the northern side of Harbor Island, Pelican Harbor Marina serves as your entry point to the waterways of Biscayne Bay and beyond.

This facility features a wide array of rental services, making it convenient to obtain jet skis, motorboats, kayaks, and paddleboards.

There is much to experience around the North Bay, and one easily accessible destination is Pelican Island. This small landmass is preserved as a natural area and recreational site, adorned with pines and mangroves, suitable for picnics, barbecues, or simply relaxing.

Some rental companies serving Pelican Harbor Marina include iPaddle Miami, Jet Ski 305 Rentals, and Breeze Jet Ski Rental.

2. Pelican Harbor Seabird Station

Pelican Harbor gained appeal in my view due to the Seabird Station, dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating native birds, reptiles, and mammals. Established in 1980 specifically for injured brown pelicans, the facility has broadened its mission over time.

During my visit, the station cared for nearly 2,000 patients, with more than 120 in treatment at that time.

This location is not a standard visitor attraction; however, it offers regular educational talks and guided bay cruises. The talks occur in the marina’s multipurpose room, while the sunset cruises provide a behind-the-scenes experience at the station.

During the cruise, guests are treated to picturesque views of the Miami skyline and the opportunity to observe brown pelicans and frigatebirds near the mangrove-lined shores of Bird Key.

3. Food Trucks Wednesdays North Bay Village

For those seeking the ideal time to visit North Bay Village, the lively food truck festival could be it. Held on Wednesdays from 5 pm to 10 pm at Pelican Harbor Marina, this event serves as a warm community gathering.

A diverse range of food trucks transforms the grass area into a large food court, complemented by the inviting atmosphere created by numerous picnic tables.

Dining options include elotes, flavored ranch fries, arepas, tostones, hot dogs, fried chicken, Cuban sandwiches, burgers, gyros, ice cream, and much more. Live music is featured each week, with performances from bands or DJs, along with activities designed to engage children.

4. Dr. Paul Vogel Community Park

Situated on the left side of North Bay Island, the city’s community park directly overlooks the water. The view from Dr. Paul Vogel park is remarkable, encompassing much of the north bay and Pelican Island.

This vista especially shines later in the day; however, visitors should be mindful of the park’s early closing hours.

The park primarily serves as a relaxing space by the water, ideal for bringing children to play. Amenities include a rentable picnic pavilion available to non-residents and a modern playground for younger children. Residents can also participate in regular yoga sessions held here.

5. MiMo Historic District

When envisioning Miami’s architecture, most people recall the vibrant Art Deco structures of South Beach.

Another notable style that emerged later is Miami Modern, which became prominent post-WWII, evident in the buildings lining Biscayne Boulevard on the Upper East Side.

Until the 1990s, this area was known for urban decline and crime, which fortunately prevented redevelopment, benefiting its current inhabitants and visitors.

Today, this vibrant district flourishes with boutiques, restaurants, and chic hotels.

A curious feature of the district is the 35-foot Coppertone Girl sign from 1959, relocated to its current spot at 7300 Biscayne Boulevard in 2008.

6. North Beach Oceanside Park

Located a mere five minutes from North Bay Village, the nearest expansive beach park is North Beach Oceanside Park. In the years leading up to my visit, this park underwent a thorough renovation.

This multi-year project enhanced everything, from landscaping to restrooms, irrigation, lighting, playground equipment, and picnic shelters.

It is undeniably a delightful location to feel the sand beneath your feet, enjoy the Atlantic waters, picnic, or observe the sunrise.

In recent years, it has also become an entry point to the nine-mile Beachwalk promenade, which will be elaborated on below.

7. Miami Beach Bandshell

Ironically, one of the finest examples of Miami Modern architecture also doubles as a state-of-the-art performance venue, situated just five minutes from North Bay Village.

The Miami Beach Bandshell, established in 1961 and designed by Norman Giller (1918-2008), contributed significantly to the area’s architectural legacy.

In the 1970s, the venue served as the winter home for The Mike Douglas Show, attracting notable South Florida figures such as Burt Reynolds. Following various uses over the years, it was acquired by Miami’s Rhythm Foundation agency in 2015.

Currently, it stands as a stylish, unique venue for live music, encompassing dance, comedy, and occasional movie screenings.

8. The Spa at Carillon Miami Wellness Resort

The Miami area is renowned for its exceptional spas; however, one of the finest is merely moments from North Bay Village. The Spa at Carillon Miami occupies a prime beachfront location.

This facility has received numerous accolades and consistently features prominently in surveys by esteemed publications such as Conde Nast Traveler. It is part of a wellness-centric resort, boasting ultra-modern fitness and European-style thermal therapy zones.

In this spirit, the spa integrates the latest technology and advancements across various disciplines, including restorative treatments, body therapies, beauty, anti-aging, and skincare.

The range of Signature Spa Services available during my visit included the Detox & Renew Wrap and the Ginger-Coconut Argan Sugar Glow, featuring an invigorating citrus-kombucha wash and ginger-lime sugar shrub.

9. Legion Park

While traffic may pose a challenge, reaching this bayfront park on Miami’s Upper East Side will take no longer than ten minutes. I have numerous reasons for recommending this brief excursion.

The spectacular view of the bay, particularly at sunrise, is awe-inspiring. Moreover, Legion Park is packed with amenities, including outdoor gym equipment, a dog park, a recreation center, picnic areas, and a playground.

Arguably the highlight is the lively farmers’ market held every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm, featuring locally grown produce, specialty foods, arts & crafts, and a diverse array of prepared food options.

10. The Beachwalk

While a pathway connecting South Beach and North Beach has existed for some time, recent improvements have made it fully paved throughout its length.

Since the unveiling of the final section in 2022, individuals can now cycle the entire route from 1st Street to 87th Street. Importantly, the entire path is ADA compliant and stroller-friendly.

Along the Beachwalk, water fountains and restrooms are conveniently available at regular intervals. Numerous beach parks along the route offer opportunities to enjoy a picnic or unwind on the sand.

For those without personal transportation, Miami’s Citi Bike bike share service features numerous stations along the Beachwalk.

11. Normandy Shores Golf Course

This esteemed public golf course is located directly across the JFK Causeway in Miami Beach. Opened in 1941, Normandy Shores Golf Course underwent renovations in the 2000s, and I have consistently found it to be in excellent condition.

Due to its exposed location, wind can occasionally present a challenge; however, the back nine particularly incorporate water hazards. Like many open spaces in Miami, iguanas can often be spotted during your game.

Since 2011, this course has hosted the South Beach International Amateur tournament, occurring the week before Christmas. This event is regarded as one of the most prestigious of its kind globally, ranking just below the NCAA Division 1 Championship and the United States Amateur tournament.

12. Normandy Isle Park & Pool

South of the golf course, on the neighboring island, lies a compact park filled with recreational opportunities. Personally, I find the primary attraction at Normandy Isle Park to be its pool complex, which features a four-lane lap pool, aerated in the summer and heated during cooler months.

A nominal fee is charged for non-residents to utilize this facility, while a fun summer highlight includes a zero to 15-inch depth water playground designed for younger family members.

The remainder of the park is entirely free for all visitors. Amenities include a soccer field, two basketball courts, a children’s area, and a pavilion available for rental for events.

13. Captain Joe’s Boat Rentals

An enjoyable and luxurious method to experience Biscayne Bay is aboard a luxury vessel. Visitors may spend their time lounging in the sun, refreshing themselves in the water, and navigating between waterfront restaurants and beautiful sandbars.

Captain Joe possesses over 25 years of expertise in this field, having relocated to Treasure Island in 2013. Despite the growth of his business, he has maintained strong relationships with his clientele.

Regarding rentals, a diverse fleet of vessels is available, ranging from the 20′ Black Hurricane to the 54′ Sea Ray La Nina. Additionally, a variety of water activities such as wakeboarding, tubing, and water-skiing can be enjoyed.

14. Shuckers Waterfront Bar & Grill

It is a positive sign when local residents refer to a restaurant as an institution, which applies to Shuckers Waterfront Bar & Grill, a long-standing establishment recognized for over three decades, situated right on the bay at the north side of Treasure Island.

This location is enviable, complemented by some of the area’s finest seafood, burgers, and steaks.

While the name indicates what they specialize in, if one were to indulge in only one item, I would recommend the freshly shucked oysters. Be aware that these are extremely popular and may sell out quickly.

Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the 30 screens throughout the bar, showcasing a variety of global sporting events year-round, with particularly high attendance during the NFL season.
