Over the last year, I have developed a keen interest in spelunking—exploring caves! Initially, I was quite averse to venturing into caves, as I was uncomfortable with the idea of traversing in darkness. However, I came to realize the remarkable natural history preserved within these subterranean spaces. Caves are important deposits of fossils, minerals, bioluminescent organisms, bodies of water, and much more, each presenting a unique awe-inspiring experience for visitors.
While I may not possess extensive geographical knowledge (unlike my colleague Lloyd), I find myself increasingly captivated by features such as stalagmites and stalactites. Each cave I’ve visited this past year has surpassed the last in terms of its intricate details, historical significance, and fascinating narratives. Below are twelve extraordinary caves worldwide that merit a visit in person!
