As an individual with an enduring passion for wildlife, my fascination began in childhood, stemming from an early interest in nature documentaries and animals. At one juncture, I even aspired to pursue veterinary medicine. Thus, it is no surprise that I seize every opportunity to observe animals in their environments. Traveling abroad only amplifies this enthusiasm, which prompted a journey by train with my family to ZOOM Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen in Germany.

The First Encounter

One aspect of visiting zoos that appeals to me is the feeling of globetrotting without leaving one location. This is manifested in the ability to witness a multitude of animals from diverse regions up close, while acquiring knowledge about each species. Similar to traveling to remarkable landmarks and sharing experiences with others, visiting a zoo fosters excitement, particularly when encountering a previously unseen creature. An amusing episode involved my attempts to clarify to Lloyd that there is no creature known as a “dopt”, which turned out to be an adoption initiative for a goat.

Childhood Experience

As a youth, the experience of visiting the zoo was profoundly enlightening. It provided an introduction to the vast biodiversity that exists beyond one’s familiar landscape, fostering an innate curiosity that drives the desire to explore the world and observe wildlife in their natural habitats, even in controlled environments like safaris.

Exploration

Let us embark on a journey through the zoo together! The first animals I encountered were the cute, yet lethargic monkeys…

Ah, those cheeky turtles! While one appeared quite lazy, possibly taking a piggyback ride…

I was rather surprised to find bats hanging above me, as I had not anticipated their presence!

These birds also took me by surprise, as they suddenly appeared while I was strolling through the conservatory…

There was a rather shy Orangutan that caught my attention!

On a side note, I hadn’t intended to wear my hat throughout the day, but it proved to be so comfortable that I ended up keeping it on. In retrospect, it seemed rather fitting for my “expedition”.

The following image was captured just before the ostrich produced an enormous droppings! It truly was the largest bird excrement I have ever encountered; thankfully, they lack the ability to fly!

With that, it was finally time to return home. After a delightful afternoon at the zoo, I can confidently express that my curiosity has been thoroughly stirred! However, our immediate priority was to find a place to dine. We boarded a bus towards the train station as we ventured into the sunset (and by sunset, I mean the nearest restaurant)…
