Summary
Following an enchanting evening, we awoke early to embark on a lengthy drive to Udawalawe National Park, where the itinerary included a morning safari followed by lunch.
Fortunately, I managed to avoid a hangover and swiftly finished breakfast, soon dozing off for most of the journey to Udawalawe.
Udawalawe is famed for its substantial populations of elephants. Shortly after our arrival, we encountered our first elephant, in addition to spotting a herd of water buffalos along the route into the park.
As we proceeded through the park, we encountered additional water buffalo. However, the most endearing sight was undoubtedly the mother elephant with her calf, captivating everyone, leading to a chorus of “Ooohs” and “Aaahs” until our driver indicated it was time to proceed.
Throughout the safari, we also encountered various other creatures such as peacocks, eagles, kingfishers, and monkeys.
We also witnessed crocodiles resting on the riverbeds, which was quite unexpected. This marked our second safari experience in Sri Lanka; interestingly, our previous safari earlier this year did not yield any crocodile sightings.
Udawalawe National Park, with its unique terrain and vibrant wildlife, is a truly remarkable destination that deserves recognition during a visit to Sri Lanka. The stunning vistas, characterized by rivers meandering through sparse forests and surrounded by verdant grasses, create an unforgettable experience. Despite the warm day, the overcast skies lent an added dimension to the beauty of the landscape.
In conclusion, Udawalawe National Park’s stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity make it an exceptional insight into Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and wildlife.
