Summary
Much as we would have preferred to traverse a Buttercup route that departed from the picturesque village of Gasadalur, known for its stunning waterfall, we needed to hastily return across the island to the capital city of Torshavn, where we had arranged to experience some Faroese rib boating.
These fast boats navigate the water at remarkable speeds, and although we had partaken in this activity before, the experience is remarkably different when traversing the choppy Faroese waters. Describing it as thrilling merely scratches the surface of the experience… (you can gain a better understanding by watching a clip of this journey in our video here – around the 2:25 minute mark).
As we proceeded to weave through the various islands, the boat took us into several caves (subject to tide conditions), allowing us to view the islands from a unique and unconventional perspective…
Eventually, we returned to Torshavn after a couple of hours at sea, looking forward to warming up and preparing for the following day of exploration on the island!
The following morning, the entire Faroe Islands awoke to a thick layer of fog, and it is truly remarkable how few locations globally can embody ‘bad weather’ as compellingly as the Faroe Islands do.
The atmospheric fog enhances the islands’ enigmatic charm and stands in stark contrast to the sunshine we experienced merely 24 hours earlier. 🙂
Accompanied by ample warmth and coffee, we set forth into the exploration of the island’s most iconic routes, including the renowned Saksunarvegur. This road leads to the village of Saksun, renowned for its spectacular stretches of dramatic mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, and a river that meanders through the landscape.
Upon reflecting on our journey, it’s clear that every step and every meter traversed deepens our appreciation for these islands. This sentiment, however, does have its comic repercussions, particularly for our driver (Lloyd, in this instance), whenever I request to stop to investigate the scenery at nearly every turn. (Truly worth it, I assure you! 😉)
