London boasts an outstanding diversity of restaurants, food markets, bars, and fine dining establishments scattered throughout this remarkable city. However, the sheer number of options can make it challenging to identify a few noteworthy restaurants worthy of your visit.
With approximately twenty thousand dining establishments in London, selecting the best can seem daunting.
As someone who has resided in London for nearly a decade, I have had the opportunity to sample various hidden delights and less favorable dining options. Consequently, I would like to highlight some of my preferred dining spots.
Below, you will find a selection of distinguished restaurants in London that merit your attention.
1.) OXO Tower Restaurant
The OXO Tower Restaurant stands out as one of London’s premier dining choices, particularly due to its breathtaking views and exquisite cuisine. Situated atop the OXO Tower, the restaurant offers a delectable selection of British dishes ideal for dinner and a splendid evening experience in the city. Moreover, it provides captivating views across the Thames, making it a fantastic venue to enjoy a sunset that bathes the city in a warm glow.
2.) Barrafina
Barrafina is among my preferred tapas destinations, showcasing excellent Basque and Spanish cuisine across three locations (Drury Lane, Dean Street, and Adelaide Street). Although reservations are not accepted, arriving just prior to the lunch rush can minimize wait times. Be sure to sample their fresh fish dishes, which change according to market availability. While the lunch experience at Barrafina may be slightly more expensive than at other tapas restaurants, the quality of the food easily justifies the cost.
3.) Clos Maggiore
Clos Maggiore is another outstanding restaurant within Covent Garden and is a deserving addition to this list. The charming atrium is beautifully ornate, while the food offers some of the finest contemporary French dishes available in London. Additionally, opting for their lunch menu will provide a more economical choice and make securing a table simpler.
4.) Bala Baya
Having visited Tel Aviv, I developed an appreciation for the culinary offerings of the region. Thankfully, Bala Baya is a fantastic option for experiencing these flavors while in London. Located slightly south of the river, a mere ten minutes from Borough Market, this charming eatery resides under the railway arches.
5.) Wolkite Kitfo
Avoid anticipating glamorous decor or formal service at Wolkite Kitfo; this establishment focuses on authentic Ethiopian cuisine, which is simply splendid. Nestled away in North London, Wolkite Kitfo is somewhat concealed from Holloway Road, making it a hidden gem worth discovering. The restaurant prides itself on providing some of the best Ethiopian food in the city, emphasizing that the experience is more about the delightful dishes than any luxurious ambiance.
6.) Kerridge’s Bar And Grill
Located within the Corinthia Hotel, Kerridge’s Bar And Grill stands out as one of the premier dining establishments in London for a meal prepared by a celebrity chef. Tom Kerridge presents an innovative menu featuring traditional British dishes with contemporary adaptations. For example, the pig cheek pie is particularly noteworthy, showcasing the restaurant’s commitment to culinary excellence.
7.) Poppies Fish and Chips
Fish and chips constitute a quintessential British experience, and I feel compelled to include one of London’s finest spots for this delicacy. Poppies cooks its fish to order, offering a casual dining atmosphere rather than an elaborate restaurant setting. Locations in Camden and Shoreditch ensure you can enjoy freshly prepared fish alongside delicious chips, providing a true British fish and chips experience.
8.) The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon
Located within Fortnum and Mason’s, the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon is an exquisite choice for those seeking a sophisticated afternoon tea experience. With nearly a century of operation, the salon offers freshly baked scones, which are delectably paired with clotted cream and jam. A remarkable range of teas awaits to satisfy even the most discerning palates. If you’re planning a visit on a weekend, securing a reservation is advisable.
9.) Tramshed
Walk into Tramshed and you’ll encounter a unique culinary experience infused with Damien Hirst’s artistry, delectable dishes, and an intimate art gallery, all created by chef Mark Hix. Tramshed is noted for its meat-centric menu, but vegetarian options are also available. The standout features include the ‘bang bang’ chicken and ‘cock and bull’ croquettes.
10.) Harwood Arms
The Sunday roast is a British tradition and a culinary experience you should indulge in while visiting the UK. Typically enjoyed during Sunday afternoons, this feast consists of generous portions of vegetables, potatoes, and various meats, complemented by Yorkshire pudding, mint sauce, and rich gravy. The Harwood Arms in Fulham is renowned for serving an exemplary roast, making it a top destination for Sunday lunches. While it is advisable to make reservations, you can also explore local pubs that offer commendable Sunday lunches.
In summary, London presents numerous exceptional dining experiences, and this compilation showcases some of the finest establishments to explore during your visit.
