5.) Boat Tour
In the late afternoon, we discerned that a boat tour would be an excellent means to appreciate the beauty of Copenhagen. There are primarily two methods I find most effective for experiencing the city: by bicycle or by boat.
Having felt somewhat unsteady after being elevated 40 meters in the air at Tivoli, I determined that a boat tour would be more suitable.
We chose to partake in the grand boat tour, which departs every 30 minutes from the area adjacent to Kongens Nytorv in the heart of the city.
During the duration of the boat tour, which lasts approximately 50 minutes, we explored the canals, historic castles, and landmarks that define Copenhagen.
It is quite remarkable; I had often heard of the canals in Amsterdam, yet I was unaware of Copenhagen’s less prominent but equally charming canals. They were indeed a delightful discovery! The tour makes a pause for a photo opportunity beside the iconic Den Lille Havfrue (The Little Mermaid), gracefully perched by the waterfront.
Moreover, I was surprised to learn from our guide that The Little Mermaid has, since its creation, become a focal point for political protests, resulting in damage to its structure. Thankfully, restoration efforts have brought it back to its original beauty for the enjoyment of visitors.
6.) Sizzling Hot-Dogs
Following our boat excursion, our appetites started to make themselves known. It felt as though the gentle sea breeze had stirred our desire for some traditional Danish fare.
We had received excellent recommendations for a charming, informal organic hot-dog stall located next to the Rundetaarn. Undoubtedly, these purveyors create some of the finest Danish hot-dogs, complete with mashed potatoes, beets, and onions.
This comforting meal felt reminiscent of soul food, prompting me to request another round. And then yet another… Admittedly, I may have indulged a bit excessively, but the flavors were irresistible!
Upon your visit, do not miss out on adding their mashed potatoes with your hot-dog; it truly was divine!
7.) The Rundetårn
After indulging in a substantial amount of hot-dogs, we proceeded on a brief walk to The Round Tower, recognized locally as the Rundetårn.
This architectural marvel was completed in 1642, and it seems that steps were a cause for concern back in 17th Century Denmark, as a staircase is notably absent.
The interior features a spiraling floor leading all the way to the top, offering splendid views of the city. During your ascent, numerous small and large rooms invite exploration, including an intriguing art gallery.
To enhance your visit, consider arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon to navigate around crowds. This attraction is accessible at no additional cost for those with a Copenhagen card.
8.) Blågårdsgade in the Evening
As the evening descended and our carbohydrate levels rebounded, we felt compelled to explore the city’s nightlife in a local fashion.
Targeting an authentic experience, we ventured to Blågårdsgade in the Nørrebro district, conveniently situated just a short 10-minute walk from our accommodation.
This neighborhood is rich with independently owned establishments, including numerous bars, coffee houses, and restaurants, radiating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Our timing was fortunate, as we were greeted by live music and a jubilant crowd.
The friendliness of the Copenhageners is remarkable; we swiftly found ourselves partaking in the revelry as if we had stumbled upon a private gathering.
As it happened, we even attended a brief house party; locals graciously invited us to join their garden gathering upon discovering our inquiry about the festivities. We stayed for a while before returning to the street, where we danced until the crowd led us towards a nearby warehouse party.
Our adventures extended into a unique bar, and we partook in festivities until late, forming connections with new acquaintances. What began as an ordinary evening transformed into a delightful blur of engaging experiences, enjoyable beverages, and wonderful company.
Blågårdsgade serves as an ideal locale for experiencing the nightlife of Copenhagen, catering to diverse preferences, whether seeking a quiet coffee shop ambiance or a laid-back bar with exceptional libations. I eagerly anticipate my return to Blågårdsgade!
9.) Spa Time
Following a restorative night’s sleep and a nourishing breakfast at Hotel Kong Arthur, we opted to take advantage of the hotel spa facilities.
The spa itself is exquisitely designed and includes a steam room, sauna, and jacuzzi, along with a traditional Scandinavian cold-water bucket for an invigorating experience.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time there, providing an ideal opportunity to unwind after a day spent exploring the city.
10.) Torvehallerne: Afternoon Food Market
As midday approached, we found ourselves with another appetite to satisfy.
There’s something about engaging in water-related activities in Copenhagen that always seems to stimulate my hunger. We decided on a brief stroll to Torvehallerne, which is an elegant food market.
I delight in seeking out culinary experiences that intrigue my palate, making food markets particularly appealing.
My top selection at the market was Palæo, which offers a stone-age themed menu focusing on wholesome foods accessible during that era.
Though it may seem primitive, the offerings are incredibly healthy, featuring an array of fresh fish, meats, copious vegetables, and an abundance of berries.
Delicious!
11.) Den Blå Planet
As the afternoon rolled in, our thoughts turned towards our departure from Copenhagen, yet not without first visiting the most phenomenal aquarium I have ever experienced: Den Blå Planet (The Blue Planet).
This aquarium is located merely a 15-minute walk from the airport, making it an ideal choice for those with spare time to explore prior to their flight.
Den Blå Planet stands as the largest aquarium in Northern Europe, dedicated to supporting scientific research, educational initiatives, and the conservation of marine life.
My favorite section was the Amazon exhibit, housed in a warm climate (which can feel quite hot if you’re still wearing your jacket, as I unfortunately was). It was a spectacular environment and provided a relaxed afternoon of learning about diverse aquatic wildlife.
Moreover, this experience was especially appreciated following our previous night’s events.
