Content Summary
Santorini is an iconic destination, renowned for its stunning vistas and unique charm. After exploring the popular locations of Santorini independently as well as taking part in a guided tour off the traditional routes, we encountered the island from a different perspective through a sailing voyage with the Sunset Oia Sailing Center.
We were collected from our accommodation early in the morning (perhaps too early given our previous night’s indulgence) and swiftly boarded the vessel. It is noteworthy to mention that the excursion included a satisfying lunch, limitless beverages (both soft and alcoholic, with quality options), and all necessary equipment for the day’s activities. The pricing varied significantly, catering to various budgets, and you have the flexibility to choose between a morning or afternoon departure.
Before long, we set sail…
…but not before capturing a cheerful selfie.
The view of Santorini as we departed was truly remarkable; it offered a perspective not visible from the island itself.
The first destination was the hot springs, warmly heated by the underlying volcano’s activity. Having previously experienced The Blue Lagoon in Iceland, my expectations were for extremely high temperatures. However, the springs presented a combination of warm sections alongside cooler water, allowing for a pleasant swimming experience. For those less adept at swimming, life vests were provided, though the distance to reach the springs was relatively short.
Following our exploration of the hot springs, we continued on to our subsequent stop…
The journey included some spectacular views of Santorini and the opportunity to relax in the sun, enjoying a glass of wine or two alongside some ouzo (after all, it’s never too early for wine when in Greece). We lounged on the catamaran, soaking in the beautiful Greek sun…
It appeared that numerous individuals were likewise enjoying the pleasant weather!
Eventually, we reached our destination—the aptly named “Red Beach.” The boat anchored, allowing us to either swim to the beach or plunge into the sea for a refreshing swim, and we chose the latter.
Following a lengthy swim and numerous attempts to jump gracefully into the water, we returned to the boat, enjoying a few drinks as we prepared for our meal (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages were included, along with our lunch).
The meal featured a generous selection of barbecued chicken and pork (prepared fresh), alongside salads, pasta, and freshly baked bread.
Before lunch, we visited the “White Beach,” where we were provided with snorkeling gear and plunged back into the sea for an exciting snorkeling experience. The warm, clear waters teemed with a variety of fish, creating a captivating experience!
Eventually, it was time for lunch, and I proceeded to enjoy the meal with considerable enthusiasm—if not a modicum of grace.
Celebrating culinary pleasures with gusto occasionally leads to a loss of decorum on my part.
Subsequently, we resumed our sailing voyage while indulging in desserts and continuing to relax under the sun.
Ultimately, we returned to the port, and at this juncture, we had already formed a pleasant camaraderie with three wonderfully entertaining Americans. Upon docking, our enjoyment led us to the nearest restaurant for additional beverages and snacks (though we ultimately opted not to order extras given our filling lunch).
Overall, it was a remarkable afternoon with the team at Sunset Oia Sailing Center. We departed with a distinctive experience in Santorini and cherished memories formed through new friendships (we are making plans to reconnect in the United States or in London soon).
Needless to say, as the famed sunset over Santorini graced us upon our return, we felt fatigued yet elated after an incredibly fulfilling day.
If you find yourself in Santorini or are contemplating a visit, reaching out to the team at Sunset Oia Sailing Center is highly recommended. Their offerings guarantee an exhilarating experience.
