Summary of Activities
Located just outside the vibrant city of Miami, the stunning beaches of Fort Lauderdale, and the iconic murals found in Hollywood, the Everglades is an exceptional destination to explore in South Florida. However, pinpointing just a few of the best activities in Everglades National Park can be challenging if you’re planning a brief visit.
Interestingly, every visit we have made to Southern Florida has always included a trip to the Everglades. This location is incredibly distinctive, and its diverse landscapes and ecosystems are undeniably captivating.
With an abundance of alligators, remarkable bird species, and immense untouched wetlands to discover, one can easily spend weeks in Everglades National Park and still not uncover all of its wonders.
This is why I would like to present some of the most remarkable locations we have cherished during our time in Florida.
Explore below to discover the best activities in the Everglades. Enjoy a remarkable adventure!
1.) Sawgrass Recreation Park
At the northernmost edge of The Everglades, Sawgrass Recreation Park is situated within the Everglades and Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Area.
This destination is highly accessible if you are based in Fort Lauderdale (approximately 25 minutes from the city center). Although it is close to the urban area, the park immerses you in natural wilderness.
Once you arrive, embark on the exhilarating Sawgrass Airboat Tour.
We enjoyed this activity tremendously, especially as we observed numerous alligators! Moreover, the staff were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the Everglades, which greatly enriched our experience.
If you’re feeling hungry, sample some freshly fried gator tail bites; they are an absolute treat.
2.) Shark Valley
Situated approximately 50 minutes from Miami, Shark Valley is one of the premier destinations in the Everglades that is easily accessible from Miami.
Here, one can traverse scenic trails and enjoy the iconic Bobcat Boardwalk, which is particularly breathtaking on sunny days. Nonetheless, be sure to bring ample water and sunscreen; the humidity and mosquitoes can be quite intense.
If relaxation is your goal, consider taking the tram tour, where you’ll have the opportunity to spot various local fauna, such as turtles and regional bird species. Naturally, alligators are abundant here as well!
Finally, enjoy spectacular views from the Shark Valley Visitor Center, which provides a panoramic perspective of the vast expanse of the Everglades. Truly breathtaking.
3.) Chokoloskee Bay
Chokoloskee Bay stretches over ten miles (16 km) and is a popular destination for anglers and water sports enthusiasts!
This area is teeming with wildlife, natural beauty, and pristine waters that simply cannot be overlooked. Once you arrive, be sure to engage in kayaking or canoeing as well.
For an easier experience, consider one of the boat tours that depart from Chokoloskee on most days.
If it’s stunning views you seek, visit the Ernest Hamilton Observation Tower, located right on the bay in Everglades City.
While in Everglades City, be sure to explore the picturesque locations along the streets. We particularly enjoyed visiting City Hall and the Museum of the Everglades.
Afterward, don’t miss stopping by the charming Havana Café of the Everglades located on Chokoloskee Island. Their shrimp is superb, and the Cuban dishes are not to be missed.
4.) Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center
Located just off Ingraham Highway, visiting the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center is one of the most advantageous activities in Everglades due to its proximity to many trails.
This center, situated at the Homestead entrance of Everglades National Park, offers a variety of exhibitions, with expert guides and ranger assistance available to direct you to local trails.
Additionally, the staff can provide information on houseboat rentals, allowing you to extend your stay in this remarkable area of Florida.
5.) Long Pine Key
If you enjoy camping, Long Pine Key is an excellent destination for you. It is particularly ideal for campers seeking quieter areas to set up their tents. This location is less frequented than some larger camping spots, making it a tranquil place to relax and enjoy the stunning views.
Furthermore, numerous hiking trails exit from the camping area, with a beautiful lake encircled by pine Rockland forest that is pristine and inviting. One of our favorites is the nearby Anhinga Trail, which is situated just a short distance from Long Pine.
Additionally, several picturesque trails are just off the campsite, such as the Long Pine Key Nature Trail, which is a must-see.
6.) Gumbo Limbo Trail
The Gumbo Limbo Trail offers a captivating view of the unique ecosystems found within the Everglades and is well worth exploring if you appreciate hiking.
This self-guided trail showcases a hardwood hammock ecosystem that is truly unique and unspoiled. Be sure to take in the scenery amongst the gumbo limbo trees while keeping an eye out for alligators!
7.) Mahogany Hammock Trail
Another beautiful self-guided trail, the Mahogany Hammock boardwalk is home to the largest living Mahogany tree in the United States.
Ideal for the entire family, this trail is relatively short (0.5 miles long), making it accessible for individuals who require easier trails to follow.
8.) Flamingo
Located just a stone’s throw from Bear Lake, Flamingo and the Flamingo Visitor Center is an essential stop when exploring the coastline around Rabbit Key Basin.
With abundant campground facilities, impressive hiking trails (the Coastal-Prairie Trail is particularly notable), and kayaking opportunities, you will surely enjoy your exploration of this southern coastal region around the visitor center.
Just be certain to keep an eye out for the graceful manatees that are often seen along the shores.
9.) Royal Palm State Park
Royal Palm State Park was established in 1916 and is a stunning location to visit when in the Everglades.
Additionally, it features two of the most traveled trails in the Everglades; the Anhinga Trail and the Gumbo Limbo Trail (both previously mentioned), which are simply breathtaking.
Moreover, just outside the park boundaries, you can visit the Everglades Alligator Farm for exhilarating airboat rides and tours through the glades.
Following your visit, consider stopping by Schnebly Redland’s Winery, where you can sample an array of delightful varieties and participate in tasting sessions. Delicious!
10.) Big Cypress National Preserve
Located over 50 miles from the center of Fort Lauderdale, Big Cypress National Preserve is a breathtaking destination!
Furthermore, this section of the Everglades offers extraordinary ranger-led tours which provide in-depth exploration of the preserve. These tours are fantastic for those seeking a deeper ecological understanding of this stunning area. They are simply fascinating.
Moreover, Big Cypress National Preserve has been internationally recognized as a Dark Sky Site.
This means it is an extraordinary location to observe constellations, planets, and other celestial phenomena in its unpolluted night skies.
