10 Best Things To Do In Kefalonia, Greece

Santorini is an exceptional island destination in Greece. Its whitewashed architecture, captivating sunsets, stunning clifftop villages, and pleasant climate create an idyllic retreat. Moreover, there are numerous delectable dishes to savor in Santorini that will fully satisfy your culinary desires throughout your stay.

While there are many remarkable locations to explore in Santorini, the emphasis on food can sometimes be overshadowed by the breathtaking scenery, where delicious Greek cuisine is available at every turn.

During our visit to Santorini, we enjoyed an exquisite meal after another. To ensure you make the most of your experience, I have compiled a concise list of essential foods to try during your stay in Santorini.

Wishing you a remarkable journey in Greece.

1. Fava me Koukia

Top foods to eat in Santorini Fava Beans

Fava me Koukia ranks among the top dishes to experience in Santorini, and I found it absolutely delightful. Although it is not traditionally a standalone meal, this side dish of fava beans serves as a delicious appetizer or a perfect accompaniment while dining in Greece.

Historically, Fava me Koukia originated from the Cyclades Islands (of which Santorini is a part), forming an essential component of the locals’ traditional diet.

Typically, Fava me Koukia consists of fava beans pureed into a paste-like consistency, often served warm. It resembles a warm hummus, and it is especially tasty when drizzled with local Greek olive oil.

2. Gefthedes

Gefthedes are excellent for lunch! They resemble meatballs and are sometimes shaped into flattened disks for consumption. These are incredibly flavorful, particularly when prepared with fresh beef or lamb, seasoned with authentic Greek herbs.

In addition to the meat, you will find an abundance of fresh oregano and mint, providing a fragrant aroma and taste.

3. Saganaki

The innovator of Saganaki deserves immense appreciation; it is simply delightful.

More of a cooking technique than a standalone dish, Saganaki consists of ingredients prepared in a pan with generous amounts of olive oil.

This dish typically features feta cheese and herbs, fried to a golden hue and then drizzled with honey. It makes for an exceptional starter or can be enjoyed as a main course when served as shrimp saganaki.

4. Greek Salad

I cannot explain why, but Greek salads taste significantly better in Greece. It might be due to the climate, the ripeness of the tomatoes, or the quality of local olive oil, but they are exceptionally appetizing. Almost all dining establishments in Santorini offer Greek salads, so you will have no difficulty finding one.

I recommend enjoying one during lunchtime while sitting outdoors with a view of the caldera. It is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm summer day in Santorini.

5. Kofta

Typically prepared on skewers (sometimes removed), Greek koftas consist of minced lamb (or sometimes beef) infused with oregano and mint, making it one of the most aromatic dishes for dinner.

They are usually served with tzatziki, pita, and freshly cut fries.

6. Greek Wine

This may seem somewhat misleading (as it is meant to be enjoyed), yet in many respects, grapes are indeed a food group, correct?

Nonetheless, wine holds great importance in Santorini; it is a staple before, during, and after meals.

7. Pomegranates

While it may not be indigenous to the Cyclades Islands, pomegranates thrive abundantly on Santorini. Their availability makes them one of the must-try foods that are quite affordable.

Every morning in Santorini, I would visit a local grocery store to purchase some fresh pomegranates, relishing them for breakfast. They were always juicy and ripe, particularly during the summer months of July.

8. Roasted Greek Lamb

It is nearly impossible to go wrong with Greek lamb, as it appears in numerous dishes. From Stifado (an appetizing stew) to shanks and shoulder cuts, the flavor is simply exquisite.

Lamb features a distinct aroma and flavor that sets it apart from other meats, and it pairs wonderfully with freshly cut chips that you should order at local restaurants.

9. Moussaka

Perhaps one of Greece’s most renowned dishes, moussaka is readily available at various restaurants in Santorini. Typically prepared with lamb, eggplant, garlic, and cheese, it is delightful to enjoy on its own or accompanied by a side salad during dinner.

Throughout my time in Santorini, I must have sampled approximately ten different moussakas, and each one was distinct. These recipes have been handed down through generations, and each cook adds their personal touch, whether a dash of extra herbs, additional sauce, or less lamb.

This variations result in a unique tasting experience with each moussaka, and I have yet to encounter one that I did not enjoy.

10. Spanakopita

Spanakopita is one of my favorite items to purchase from the bakeries in Santorini, and they are particularly delightful in the morning. Composed of filo pastry and filled with feta cheese and spinach, they make for a delicious on-the-go snack.

Most bakeries and breakfast establishments offer Spanakopita, ensuring they are easily accessible. Pair it with a refreshing frappe, and you are set for a wonderful day in Santorini.

11. Souvlaki and Gyros

Souvlaki is a dish I can indulge in repeatedly when traveling through Greece. Consisting of chunks of lamb, beef, or chicken grilled over an open flame, it pairs excellently with fresh salad, tzatziki, and pita. Typically, they also come with fries. If they are not included, kindly request them, as the freshly cut chips in Greek restaurants offer a distinctive flavor experience.

Gyros are a top choice for those seeking quick dining options in Santorini. Typically consisting of thinly sliced meat wrapped in warm pita bread, they make for a delicious lunch (or snack) while exploring Oia. Additionally, you can enjoy fresh cucumber, tomatoes, cheese, and sometimes fries inside the pita as well.

Furthermore, if wine (Greek or otherwise) is not to your preference, you have the option to accompany your gyro with a refreshing Mythos beer.
