Explore Lysefjord: Your Ultimate Guide to Pulpit Rock in Norway

This was likely one of the most significant insights during our journey across the Nordics with Scandic, a detail I will elucidate later. I do not think even Scandic comprehended it at the moment I did. However, before we delve deeper, let’s address the essentials regarding accessing Pulpit Rock and the Lysefjord.

How to Get There?

  • Fly into Stavanger.
  • Take a ferry from Stavanger to Tau. Staying at the Scandic City Hotel Stavanger is advantageous as it is merely a 2-minute walk from the ferry terminal. Additionally, you can drive your vehicle onto the ferry.
  • Take a bus or drive to the Preikestolen (the Norwegian term for ‘Pulpit Rock’) car park.
  • Finally, embark on a hike to the summit. This hike can be completed in approximately two hours, but brace yourself for an uphill trek.

What to Pack?

  • Food and beverages.
  • Warm clothing (the specific requirements depend on the season, but it is advisable to bring a jacket).
  • Hiking boots.
  • Waterproof jackets and bag covers; should it rain, keeping both yourself and your equipment (cameras, phones, etc.) dry is essential.
  • Swimwear; surprisingly, there is a lake near the top where swimming is possible.

Tips and Tricks

  • Despite the challenging ascent, one does not need to be an avid hiker or mountaineer to engage in this trek. The average person can complete the hike, provided one takes breaks as necessary.
  • Consider taking smaller, calculated steps rather than large strides; this will conserve energy throughout the climb.
  • Keep an eye out for trail markers; we followed the paths indicated by red “T” symbols painted on the rocks.
  • If possible, ensure you rest adequately before starting the hike.
