Experience PortAventura: A Day of Thrill and Delight
Until a few weeks prior, I was not familiar with PortAventura.
In contrast, Lloyd had prior knowledge, having heard about it from a friend who recently visited. Consequently, when we planned to go to PortAventura for a gathering, I was unaware of what to anticipate.
It is important to note that you may not have encountered PortAventura while in Barcelona, as it is located in the resort city of Salou, adjacent to the picturesque city of Tarragona.
PortAventura is conveniently situated just one hour from Barcelona airport. When considering that it takes approximately 30 minutes to travel from the airport to the city center, accessing the park becomes straightforward. Moreover, the hotel at PortAventura can assist with organizing your transportation to and from the park.
For context, PortAventura is not a conventional theme park; it is an extensive and extraordinary establishment that surpasses most parks seen in Europe. Notably, it houses the fastest and tallest roller-coaster in Europe, making it a truly remarkable destination within the realm of theme parks.
Coming from the UK, where theme parks often feel either overly modest or exceedingly limited in scope, I believed that to truly experience an impressive theme park, one would need to journey all the way to Florida or the United States.
A few years ago, while on a three-week road trip across America with my friends, I had my first encounter with a “super-theme park.” Even the most skeptical among us found immense enjoyment during our visit!
We capitalized on priority access passes, allowing us to bypass the standard wait times, stayed at the resort, and even arrived at the park an hour before it officially opened. The advantages of resort accommodations significantly enhanced our experience in Florida, thereby setting high expectations for my visit to PortAventura, despite my unfamiliarity.
However, our arrival in Barcelona occurred during the early morning hours—our flight left London at 10:20 PM and landed at 1 AM. Fortunately, our driver, arranged through PortAventura, was readily available to transport us to the resort.
After checking in and grabbing a quick meal, we promptly rested, sleeping soundly until breakfast time the following morning.
Unsure of what to expect for breakfast, I left my camera in the room. To my surprise, the breakfast offered was quite exceptional! Along with classic options like pancakes and bacon drizzled with maple syrup, eggs, additional bacon, sausages, toast, and a generous array of fruits and pastries, I indulged in a notable number of churros.
However, it was inopportune to overindulge in breakfast, given the rides that awaited us afterward. To regain some composure, I took a leisurely stroll around the hotel grounds before heading to the theme park.
The hotel boasts a Wild Wild West theme, which initially perplexed me. Enthused by the various signs, I often found myself wanting to explore different structures, only to realize they were part of the hotel’s decor.
Once we were ready, we made our way to the park gates, which are accessible only to hotel guests, located just two minutes away by foot. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by a massive wooden roller coaster that set the tone for the day ahead!
Admittedly, I experience considerable anxiety prior to roller coaster rides. Although I enjoy the adrenaline rush, I often feel anxious from the moment I decide to take the ride until it begins—sometimes even during the ride!
Fortunately, the wooden coaster proved to be a gentle introduction, allowing me to find my footing. After disembarking, I was prepared to face everything that PortAventura had to offer.
The following hours were an exhilarating whirlwind filled with rollercoaster rides, joyful screams, and an abundance of excitement throughout the park. My inner child was awakened, and it proved difficult to rein him in!
Ultimately, once we were halfway through our park experience (several hours later), I started to realize just how vast PortAventura truly is. We had scarcely begun our adventure, and still, so much more awaited us.
Concluding this thrilling journey, we decided to venture outside the main PortAventura park to visit Ferrari Land, which lies just beyond.
Ferrari Land is acclaimed for housing the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Europe—a title that filled me with both excitement and apprehension.
As I approached the prospect of riding this exhilarating roller coaster, I felt my initial excitement wane into fear. However, my determination to conquer this challenge overrode my anxiety.
In an effort to build my confidence, I explored Ferrari Land, seeking out other challenges while also indulging in refreshing beverages in the pleasant sun at the Pit Lane.
Eventually, the moment arrived with only 40 minutes until closing time for Ferrari Land (which shuts at 5 PM, three hours prior to PortAventura itself), prompting me to gather the courage to ride the much-feared one-loop coaster.
Surprisingly, the experience was absolutely exhilarating! My initial dread was quickly supplanted by exhilaration as soon as the ride commenced, leading me to take the plunge a second time, despite any efforts to convince Lloyd to join me!
With the momentum of my newfound adventure spirit, I enthusiastically sought out the remaining rides I had yet to experience.
Stay tuned for the continuation of my adventures, where I delve deeper into my experiences at Ferrari Land and beyond.
