Summary
We have already discussed the islands that should be on your travel itinerary, so it is presumed additional introduction to this topic is unnecessary (please refer to the previous article for further insights). Notably, what wasn’t mentioned earlier is that one of these islands boasts one of the most secluded and picturesque beaches you will ever encounter. You may have come across several images across the blog (like here and here), but this serves as the comprehensive discussion on the beach at Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands in Thailand. However, let’s resolve some logistical details first.
HOW TO GET THERE:
To provide context, I will outline our journey from the UK. Initially, we took a flight, followed by another flight, and then a third flight, which was succeeded by a taxi ride and then a boat ride (from Phuket to Phi Phi). We then transferred to another speedboat from one island to another, and swam to an opening in a rock, clinging to ropes to navigate this passage (resulting in several grazed knees). Finally, we traversed through some foliage (which I might start describing to my friends as a ‘substantial forest!’) to finally arrive at the beach. Once you step onto it, you will indeed appreciate the effort invested in reaching this breathtaking locale.
QUICK TIPS:
- Pack provisions and beverages. There are no facilities for purchasing anything on-site. Fortunately, we had arranged for a private speedboat (which was surprisingly economical and comparable in pricing to shared options), and part of our package included abundant refreshments, fruits, and snacks. Given the heat on the island, at minimum, ensure to take water with you.
- Secure waterproof bags (such as waterproof sacks) for your cameras, mobile devices, and anything else you do not wish to get wet during the swim. We were equipped as this was provided with our boat service, but it is prudent to confirm availability as these are readily obtainable on the main island. - Avoid collecting random objects in the water while on the beach. A friend of mine, Georgia, attempted this and ended up with a pinched finger from the smallest crab imaginable! I was equally as adventurous, allowing the fine sand to slip through my fingers, and it was sheer luck that I avoided a crab pinch myself.
- Lastly, do not forget to change into your swimwear before entering the water. In my excitement when the speedboat arrived at the bay, I jumped in fully clothed, only realizing post-swim that those were indeed the only clothes I had brought along. Georgia and Lloyd, on the other hand, had their swimwear on and remained dry throughout the day’s adventures. Interestingly, I did remember to remove my shoes.
