Summary
Tulum is a remarkable destination within Mexico and ranks among the best-preserved coastal Maya sites globally. From the initial stages of planning our visit to Mexico, it was clear that a stop at this exquisite location was essential.
Tulum is accessible for a day trip (or slightly longer) while in Cancun or the broader Yucatan Peninsula region, permitting travelers to appreciate some of Mexico’s most captivating sights within a relatively short distance from most regional resorts.
Consider the following essential tips derived from my recent experience in Tulum:
Where is Tulum?
Tulum is located on the eastern coast of Mexico, in the state of Quintana Roo.
For those unfamiliar with the geography of Mexico, it is situated approximately two hours south of Cancun (via car or shuttle), overlooking the stunning Caribbean Sea, which invites many to dive right in.
What’s to see in Tulum?
As previously mentioned, Tulum holds significant archaeological importance, serving as one of the last Maya cities established before their decline roughly five centuries ago.
Tulum was historically one of the most important trading cities constructed by the Maya civilization and served as a vibrant trading hub, showcasing numerous architectural marvels, including the Pyramid El Castillo, God of Winds Temple, The Great Palace, Templo Dios del Viento, Temple of the Frescos, along with the stunning Tulum beach.
Every site within Tulum is positioned within the confines of this historic city, with the exception of a small beach area that is dedicated to the charming nesting sea turtles that continue to inhabit Tulum.
Should I visit Tulum?
The concise answer is affirmative!
While Tulum may not reach the height of significant monuments such as those found in Chichen Itza, it remains equally captivating. One key takeaway from our excursion was recognizing that these two extraordinary Maya sites should not be juxtaposed against one another.
One of the key advantages of Tulum is its proximity to other locations such as Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, or Riviera Cancun. This accessibility allows travelers to delve into the rich history of this unique region while also enjoying luxurious hotels or vibrant nightlife that Cancun provides (if that is of interest).
How to get there?
There are several methods to reach Tulum, with the most convenient options being either a self-driven tour from your accommodation or a private tour. While private excursions tend to be more costly, they offer the advantage of providing relaxation without the stress of navigating the roads.
What’s the weather like in Tulum?
The climate in Tulum is characterized by heat and high humidity. Thus, do not be deceived by the gentle sea breeze – sunburn can be quite painful and should not be taken lightly, as I personally learned during this trip. It is advisable to pack a hat and generously apply SPF sunscreen to protect your skin. While some sun is enjoyable, skin damage is not.
It is advisable to commence your visit early in the morning, prior to the peak sun hours, or in the late afternoon after the sun’s intensity has diminished and before larger crowds gather.
Swim with turtles!
This area of Mexico is renowned for its local sea turtle population that frequent the beaches. Various protected bays provide the opportunity to swim alongside these majestic creatures, allowing for close encounters.
However, ensure that you do not touch them, and maintain a respectful distance to avoid causing stress in their habitat. After all, one would not want an unfamiliar person intruding in their home.
A recommended spot to swim with the turtles near the area is Akumal Beach, where the waves are gentler, and turtle sightings are abundant!
We scheduled our visit to Tulum to coincide with swimming alongside wild sea turtles in the ocean, serving as a rejuvenating conclusion to our day, especially given we encountered heat exhaustion amid Tulum’s high humidity.
