Café Balear is renowned as one of the most favored dining establishments in Menorca. During the peak summer season, acquiring a table becomes exceedingly difficult, and patrons often find themselves queuing for extended periods!

Fortunately, our visit occurred well before the onset of the season, allowing us to enjoy the restaurant with minimal crowds!

A particularly popular culinary offering at this establishment is the renowned lobster soup.

Although I generally prefer my lobster simply prepared (with the exception of a generous helping of garlic butter), I was curious about this distinctive dish.

This lobster dish holds significant cultural importance on the island! For a long period, lobster was regarded as the sustenance of the less affluent, while chicken was seen as the meal of the wealthy. Due to the local workforce having easier access to lobster, it subsequently became a staple dish on the island. It is rather intriguing how the dynamics of food preferences have shifted over time, isn’t it?

After settling in with some wine, we ventured down to the kitchen where the chef was ready to showcase his culinary skills.

Experiencing a meal prepared from scratch is a different delight altogether, as it adds an element of appreciation to the dining experience (although there was a light squeal from Lloyd upon witnessing the chef’s preparation of the lobster; evidently, he was unaware of the happenings behind the scenes before this moment!).

Indeed, the lobster dish holds significant cultural value for the island! Historically, lobster was considered a food of the less fortunate, while chicken was regarded as a dish for the affluent. Given the local laborers had easier access to lobster, it quickly ascended to culinary prominence on the island. It is fascinating to observe these changes in food cultures, don’t you think?

Upon our departure from the restaurant, the darkness had enveloped the surroundings, compelling us to return to the hotel for a restful night’s sleep before embarking on the adventures of the next day.
