As an enthusiast of the Greek Islands, I appreciate them not only for their beauty but also for the array of experiences they offer, from delectable Greek cuisine to charming secluded bays exuding that genuine Greek hospitality. The abundance of destinations to visit ensures an exhilarating experience during your Crete holidays.
Throughout the years, we have explored numerous Greek Islands. Our travels have taken us to Corfu, Samos, Skiathos, Rhodes, Santorini, Simi, and, naturally, Crete.
It almost feels like I’ve sampled every culinary delight in Greece, evident from the full stomach I now possess 🤣, as the cuisine is simply exceptional!
To shift gears, if you have yet to visit the Greek Islands, you may assume they are similar in nature. However, allow me to assure you that they are distinctly different in various aspects.
Each possesses its unique allure, diverse Cretan dishes, and numerous exquisite villages to discover during your Crete holidays. This is why we were thrilled to uncover several breathtaking sites during our recent journey to Crete.
Where to Stay
During our stay in Crete, we resided at TUI Sensatori, which comprises a selection of hotels globally known for their exceptional quality.
Since our visit took place in October, capitalizing on the remaining summer sunlight was a priority, and the hotel was ideally positioned for this purpose! Particularly impressive was its coastal location, coupled with a suite that provided direct access to a private pool (a definite advantage!).
Moreover, it featured an impressive array of restaurants, presenting itself as a personal challenge to sample all that they offered! #NoRegrets 🤣
Returning to such a stunning hotel after a day of discovering the island was a delightful experience, as was simply relaxing and enjoying the tranquil surroundings.
What I appreciated most about this trip was the opportunity to explore the entire island comprehensively, while also affording ample time for relaxation at the hotel.
Places to See on Your Crete Holidays
Before elaborating further, I would like to share a selection of our most cherished experiences during our time in Crete. Explore the highlights below showcasing our favorite locations.
1.) Discover Seitan Limania Beach
Seitan Limania remains one of my preferred beaches in Crete, located approximately a 30-minute drive from Chania (pronounced, han-ia).
Although reaching the bay involves a considerable trek down, the reward of pristine, sapphire waters and the sight of mountain goats descending to the shore is undeniably worth the effort.
Prior to your visit, ensure to carry sufficient water, ample sunscreen, and an assortment of snacks, as there are no provisions nearby. The prospect of having to ascend the hill for water would undoubtedly be exasperating—at least for me.
2.) Explore Chania
Chania is another delightful city on the island worthy of exploration. While there, be sure to wander through the Venetian Harbor, meander around the charming cobbled streets, and step aboard the quaint boat shops that dot the bay, which are truly delightful.
If your quest is for a delectable lunch, make your way to Mon Es, a mere five-minute walk from Venizelou Square. Here, you will find an array of freshly caught seafood, beautifully paired with Cretan salads and other delicious dishes that are not to be missed.
3.) Visit Hersonissos
If you seek respite from the coastline, venture into the mountains to discover the picturesque town of Hersonissos and its surrounding hamlets. This area boasts a beautifully authentic atmosphere, home to charming restaurants and intimate art galleries.
After exploring the town, be sure to visit Taverna Harakas, a family-run establishment renowned for serving some of the finest Greek cuisine in the region. Unsurprisingly, we indulged in generous portions of Greek salad alongside the most delectable Moussaka and Arni Skordo (a delightful blend of Cretan cheese, potatoes, and vegetables).
4.) Discover Spinalonga Island
Situated within the Gulf of Elounda, Spinalonga island is approximately a one-hour journey from Heraklion and is certainly worth a visit to explore its ancient ruins. Historically, a leper colony with a rich Ottoman heritage, the island is accessible via small boats offering trips to its shores.
This site is an excellent choice for those interested in historical attractions during their Crete holidays.
5.) Visit Balos Lagoon
After your explorations in Chania or Heraklion, you will likely deserve a break at the beach. Set your sights on Balos Lagoon, an area renowned for its idyllic beauty.
It can become quite congested during peak season; however, don’t allow that to deter you. For beach enthusiasts, it ranks among the top destinations. Conclusively, be sure to visit Kafeneio Mezedopoleio Eilikrineia (a bit of a mouthful, I know) for some of Crete’s most exquisite cuisine.
6.) Explore Knossos Palace
It is estimated that approximately 100,000 inhabitants once resided in Knossos, along with its neighboring areas. With such a profound historical narrative spanning thousands of years, it is one of the oldest cities in Europe that remains accessible today.
While it is true that Knossos Palace now lies in ruins, it remains a landmark worth visiting in Crete and potentially one of the island’s earliest archaeological sites. During your visit, ensure to observe the various throne areas, view the restorations undertaken by Evans, and uncover the reasons for the city’s suspected abandonment.
It is theorized that this city may have been destroyed by a tsunami resulting from the same eruption at Santorini that effectively divided the island. Fascinating, isn’t it?
7.) Visit Heraklion
This city served as our point of arrival and is a mere 25-minute drive from our accommodation in Crete. Furthermore, it offers an excellent opportunity for exploration during a few leisurely hours, either before or after lunch.
While in Heraklion, be sure to explore the Venetian Loggia and visit the Fortress of Koules along the waterfront. It is one of the cities contributing to the diverse experiences available during your time in Crete.
Should you be in search of a delightful dining experience, I recommend Peskesi, known for its exquisite representation of Cretan cuisine.
8.) Monastery of Arkadi
For those traveling from Heraklion to Chania, I recommend making a stop at the Monastery of Arkadi, located approximately 20 minutes from the main road. Upon arrival, investigate the grounds, delve into the monastery’s intriguing history, and be sure to visit the bell tower.
9.) Explore Georgioupoli
Approximately 20 minutes east of Chania lies the charming town of Georgioupoli, which features an iconic church situated remarkably in the sea.
After parking your vehicle, make your way to the waterfront to visit the town’s famous church, accessible via a man-made stone walkway leading directly to its entrance.
Take note, however, that the walkway can become slippery and uneven. Therefore, it’s advised to wear appropriate footwear and proceed with caution! Lastly, make sure to visit Corissia Park for some of the most refreshing cocktails at sunset.
