Explore Uunartoq Hot Springs: A Natural Gem in Greenland

Following our navigation through Prince Christian Sound, we arose early to behold the stunning scenery of Greenland, situated just north of Nanortalik.

After a brief orientation, we learned that we would be disembarking in Greenland, anchored offshore and taking our small boats to the shoreline, which heightened my anticipation, particularly with the prospect of visiting the natural geothermal pools of Uunartoq Hot Springs. These springs are as natural as they come.

Immediately upon disembarking the Zodiac, I connected with the island’s earth. I felt the desire to literally experience the land. I wished to grasp the soil, stroke the grass, and truly comprehend what constitutes Greenland, Greenland. Does this resonate with your understanding?

Our group traversed across Uunartoq, an island merely a few hundred meters from the mainland, largely unspoiled apart from a modest wooden changing facility provided for the natural hot spring.

After a trek lasting approximately 20 minutes, accompanied by our Polar Bear escort, we arrived at Uunartoq Hot Springs in Greenland.

In remote regions of Greenland, there is always a potential risk of encountering polar bears, which are indeed perilous creatures.

Fortunately, no polar bears were sighted during our visit; an outcome for which I felt grateful. I would undoubtedly have startled them away at the sight of myself in swimming attire.

Once we were appropriately attired in our bathing suits, we eased into the warm waters of Uunartoq Hot Springs, which maintained a temperature around 38 degrees Celsius, akin to a comforting bath amid the brisk Greenlandic breeze.

Over the course of a few hours, we relished every moment spent in Uunartoq Hot Springs, cherishing the distinct experience of bathing in a geothermal pool whilst surrounded by floating icebergs.

As the time approached for us to return to the zodiac, the journey back to the Ocean Albatros was notably enhanced by the sight of numerous icebergs along the route.

Following our brief zodiac tour, we expeditiously proceeded to a buffet-style lunch, replenishing our energy before retreating to our quarters for a relaxing experience of observing the icebergs drifting by. It was indeed a magnificent sight.

We dedicated the remainder of the day to reflecting on the remarkable memories made at Uunartoq Hot Springs in Greenland, while also assimilating information pertaining to our next destination, Qassiarsuk (Brattahlíð). The expedition team ensured we were adequately prepared and eager for the experiences awaiting us on land the subsequent day.
