FROM CAROLINE:
It is that time of year once more. The season began splendidly with autumn, characterized by its lovely hazy sunlight and the beautiful orange leaves falling, evoking warm, nostalgic feelings until it inevitably transitions into the brisk embrace of winter. Although winter can be picturesque with its snow, it often devolves into a monotonous grey, dark, and cold experience. Daylight wanes around 4 PM and gradually decreases in duration with each subsequent day.
This shift in season prompts my thoughts to warm retreats from the frigid climates of Europe. Having longed for winter escapes, I have finally made plans for such a retreat this year—I’m heading to Thailand for Christmas and New Year’s. The anticipation is palpable! Apart from Thailand, here are five enticing warm getaways from chilly Europe.
1.) Dubai or Abu Dhabi
The United Arab Emirates provides a reliable option for a warm and successful getaway—while sandstorms may occur, the climate is consistently warm. Presently, the temperature in Abu Dhabi reaches 35 degrees Celsius, which is pleasant, but summer temperatures can soar to an oppressive 50 degrees Celsius. Dubai and Abu Dhabi boast numerous attractions tailored to various tastes, be it luxury, relaxation, cultural immersion, or exciting experiences. Traveling from Dubai to Abu Dhabi typically takes about an hour, barring traffic conditions. Among my recommended activities in the Emirates are dune bashing in the desert, exploring the traditional souks, particularly if one wishes to have tailored clothing created, and visiting the remarkable mosque in Abu Dhabi, recognized as the largest mosque in the world—an experience that is essential for every traveler!
2.) Tel Aviv
Tel Aviv, Israel’s second-largest city, is a more accessible and practical travel destination, presenting more affordable flight options relative to various alternatives. While the temperature may not reach blistering highs, it remains significantly warmer than in Northern Europe during winter months. Dubbed the hipster capital of the Middle East, Tel Aviv is renowned for its eclectic mix of art deco and art nouveau architecture. The city boasts various art museums and galleries that attract art enthusiasts globally. Additionally, the culinary scene, with offerings of traditional Israeli dishes such as hummus, invites you to indulge in delightful meals during your visit.
3.) Marrakech
Similar to Tel Aviv, while Marrakech may not be the hottest of destinations at present, the local climate coupled with its rich culture transports visitors to an entirely different realm, despite its proximity just a few hours by air. Marrakech stands out as an intriguing city where diverse cultures and languages coexist. This diversity equips the city with myriad activities and sights to explore. Visitors can embark on a day trip to the striking Atlas Mountains, known for their ochre coloration, explore an authentic Berber village, indulge in spa treatments, or enjoy a refreshing swim in a hotel pool. Furthermore, tourist favorites include visiting historical sites, strolling through the Yves Saint Laurent Garden, or shopping amidst the vibrant souks brimming with endless merchandise.
4.) Miami
Miami epitomizes a spirited atmosphere; it embodies an enticing coastal destination adjacent to Central America and the captivating Caribbean islands. The city enjoys warm weather year-round, making it an ideal winter destination. Miami is equipped with a major international airport, facilitating numerous direct flight options from various origins. Explore nightlife in South Beach, visit natural reserves, embark on a road trip to the picturesque Florida Keys, or indulge in art events such as Art Basel week (scheduled for December 3-6, 2015). In the event you cannot partake during that week, Miami’s Wynwood district, an artistic hub created from a transformed industrial area, boasts a rich array of graffiti murals and artistic expressions, drawing the attention of art enthusiasts and visitors alike. Furthermore, hip coffee shops and exceptional dining establishments have recently emerged in Wynwood, enriching this increasingly vibrant community.
5.) Tanzania

Many may share the aspiration of embarking on a safari adventure, and Tanzania epitomizes an ideal destination for such an experience. Shows like Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown,” featuring Zanzibar and Tanzania, have only intensified my desire. Experts often suggest visiting Tanzania during the winter months for optimal safari conditions due to the short rainy season. Tanzania stands out as a multifaceted destination, offering opportunities for an exhilarating safari, cultural experiences in vibrant cities, and the potential to conclude your journey with relaxation on the idyllic beaches of Zanzibar, complete with its stunning turquoise waters. Pure bliss!
