Finland is a remarkable nation to discover. It boasts remarkable diversity, with significant variations across regions. Nevertheless, selecting the premier spots in Finland for a single journey can be quite challenging, particularly if you intend to maximize your experience.
On one hand, you have the impressive Finnish cities and towns, while on the other, there are enchanting locations such as Lapland and numerous islands that dot the coastline. Indeed, you will be presented with a plethora of options!
With any voyage, one of the principal considerations is the amount of time available. Therefore, I wish to highlight some of my preferred and noteworthy destinations in Finland for your itinerary. My travels involved driving (along with some train journeys), which I found to be quite straightforward.
1.) Helsinki
For many visitors to Finland, the capital city of Helsinki is typically the initial destination. Surrounded by an archipelago of 330 islands, Helsinki presents a wealth of history alongside a vibrant atmosphere.
Should this be your inaugural visit to Helsinki, be sure to stop at the National Museum of Finland (featuring the ‘Story of Finland’ and ‘Prehistory’ exhibitions), relax at Hietaranta Beach, and take a ferry to the Fortress of Suomenlinna.
If you seek to maximize your sightseeing in Helsinki, ensure you visit the iconic Kamppi Chapel of Silence, Uspenskin Cathedral, and the Temppeliaukion Church, which appears to be carved directly from the rock.
After all the exploration, consider dining at Baskeri & Basso for some of the finest cuisine in the city, and do not overlook their exceptional wine cellar! If you desire something more seafood-oriented, a visit to Finlandia Caviar is a must, offering a wealth of knowledge about their delectable dishes.
For a distinguished accommodation option, consider the Hotel St George, conveniently located in the city center. Helsinki indisputably ranks as one of the finest places in Finland for exploration.
2.) Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi embodies a winter wonderland, making it an ideal destination for winter escapades. As the capital of Lapland (and incidentally, the official residence of Santa Claus), it offers an abundance of attractions.
Situated within the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi serves as a remarkable gateway to the breathtaking natural landscapes of the region, replete with outdoor attractions such as Oulanka National Park and skiing opportunities in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park (approximately 200km away), and also the Arktikum museum. Additionally, for those who have behaved well, a visit to the Santa Claus office is recommended!
For a delightful culinary experience, consider dining at the Kotahovi restaurant, known for serving the heartiest lohikeitto (a creamy salmon soup). It’s scrumptious.
Moreover, Rovaniemi is a prime location to witness the enchanting Northern Lights! Just ensure you pack sufficient warm attire and some thermal heat pads.
3.) Lake Saimaa
Situated within the Finnish Lake district, Lake Saimaa is the largest lake across Finland.
One of the finest activities to engage in at Lake Saimaa is to simply unwind and appreciate the stunning natural scenery of this part of Finland.
Upon your arrival, consider renting a picturesque cottage, embarking on kayaking adventures, hiking the Elsa Heporauta trail (which is a lengthy 24 km), and engaging in fishing activities on the lake.
If adventure isn’t to your liking, take a stroll through Linnansaari National Park, marvel at Olavinlinna Castle, and partake in berry picking, a well-loved pastime in Finland.
Make sure you are informed about which berries are safe, as it’s always a sound choice to seek bilberries or lingonberries, should you have any doubts. The experience is truly breathtaking and represents one of the top destinations to enjoy the essence of Finland.
4.) Nuuksio National Park
Admittedly, Finland features an array of national parks and splendid natural sites; however, this vastness may complicate the process of identifying a few key parks to visit. For me, one of the finest locations to appreciating the natural allure is Nuuksio National Park.
Fortunately, it is relatively accessible from Helsinki, making it convenient for visitors.
Once you arrive, be sure to traverse the Haukankierros Trail (measuring approximately 4 km), ski during winter, or indulge in canoeing, as the views around dusk are nothing short of spectacular.
5.) Tampere
Tampere was the first location I ever experienced in Finland, and it is a city that I genuinely enjoyed visiting. If it’s not your first stop, it is easily accessible by train from Helsinki and ranks as one of the best places in Finland to discover more of the remarkable cities.
As the second largest city in Finland, there exists a plethora to see and do once you arrive. Popular sites include the Pyynikki Park and Observation Tower for captivating views, the Vapriikki Museum, the Lenin Museum, or even a visit to the Sarkanniemi Theme Park. Additionally, a Moomin Museum can be found here as well.
For a delightful meal, venture to Pikkubistro Kattila, where you can sample some of the finest local dishes. Make sure to try their lamb, as it is truly exquisite.
If you desire a brief escape from the city, consider visiting the enchanting lakes of Pyhajarvi and Nasijarvi.
6.) Saariselka (Lapland)
If you have ever aspired to sleep in an igloo featuring a glass ceiling, then Saariselka is among the premier locations in Finland to fulfill this dream.
Opt for a stay at a Kakslauttanen Igloo at the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, where you can enjoy the world-renowned igloos with glass ceilings, ideal for stargazing and observing the spectacular Aurora Borealis on clear evenings.
While you are there, be sure to partake in dog sledding, snowshoe through the stunning trails, and make a visit to the Urho Kekkonen National Park, which is breathtaking. Additionally, do not overlook the Sámmi Cultural Centre (approximately 1 hour away) to learn more about the indigenous Sami culture.
7.) Old Rauma
If you are intrigued by the historical aspects of Finland, Old Rauma should be on your itinerary. This historic wooden city center of Rauma is recognized as one of the finest places to witness and has even attained UNESCO World Heritage status.
Featuring an abundance of colorful residences, cobblestone avenues, ornate gates, and exquisite structures, walking through the town transports you back in time. In essence, Old Rauma boasts a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages.
An experience not to be missed, as it is regarded as one of the largest cohesive wooden towns in the Nordic countries. You can easily undertake a day trip to Old Rauma from Turku, which is highly manageable. A bus journey takes approximately 90 minutes, while a car journey is about 70 minutes.
8.) Turku
Turku is recognized as Finland’s oldest city and served as its capital for many centuries prior to Helsinki’s ascendancy. Although it has since lost the title of capital, it has certainly not lost its charm. Turku is undoubtedly among the best places in Finland to visit, particularly for urban getaways.
Upon your arrival, be sure to visit Turku Castle, the stunning Cathedral, Aboa Vetus and Ars Nova, and Archangel Michael’s Church while you stroll through the city.
Additionally, the Aura River runs through the heart of the city, and during summer, boat bars line the river, making it an ideal spot to enjoy a drink (or two).
If you’re craving a meal or drink, consider visiting Ravintola Kaskis, Tinta, or Mami for delectable local cuisine. And be sure to sample Lihapullat (Finnish meatballs), which are exceptionally tasty.
Should you feel inclined to step away from the city for a while, take a detour around the picturesque Turku Archipelago, a truly stunning destination.
9.) Rukatunturi
If skiing is your passion, Rukatunturi unquestionably ranks among the best places in Finland to experience!
With 34 slopes and over 500 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails, Ruka, as it’s commonly referred, is a skier’s paradise. You can partake in hiking, renting snowmobiles, or enjoying dog sledding adventures (just be sure to bundle up).
For dining options, visit Riipinen Wild Game Restaurant, which serves traditional Finnish meats sourced from the region. Be sure to go after your skiing excursion, as you’re sure to be famished!
10.) Hameenlinna
Positioned at the edge of Vanajavesi Lake and bordered by the Hattelmala hills to the south, Hameenlinna ranks as one of the best places in Finland to explore a city rich in history.
While here, be sure to stop by the Sibelius Museum, the former residence of composer Jean Sibelius, explore Häme Castle (dating back to the Middle Ages), and meander through the Hameenlinna Art Museum.
If your explorations have sparked hunger, visit the Gingerbread House, renowned for serving delectable Finnish dishes, particularly their charcoal-grilled salmon, which is delightful.
11.) Savonlinna
Savonlinna is an enchanting city located amid Finland’s Lakeland, positioned on two islands between the lakes of Haapavesi and Pihlavesi. It certainly captures the eye.
It serves as an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts, with easy access to Punkaharju and Kolovesi National Park.
What Savonlinna is particularly famous for is the Savonlinna Opera, which is hosted at the historic Olavinlinna Castle every summer!
12.) Porvoo
This medieval city is truly picturesque and can be easily visited during your time in Helsinki. With vibrant traditional houses, cozy cafés, cobblestone streets, and charming little shops, Porvoo is delightful to explore.
After wandering through the old town, make your way to the Brunberg Candy Factory to indulge in their delicious treats. Furthermore, don’t forget to visit the Cathedral of Porvoo, one of the region’s oldest churches.
Getting to Porvoo is simple, as the drive takes around 50 minutes from the city center (or 70 minutes via bus).
13.) Hanko
A surprising aspect for some is that Finland possesses an abundance of magnificent beaches, particularly enticing during the summer months. The charming town of Hanko boasts approximately 30 km of sandy shores that should not be overlooked.
This destination is perfect for leisurely days spent relaxing on the beach, sipping beverages, and enjoying live performances at Pub Gronan. It’s an idyllic way to unwind.
However, should you feel adventurous, take the scenic trails of Tulliniemi Nature Path, which are particularly stunning during summer.
14.) Levi
For an authentic winter wonderland experience coupled with breathtaking views of the Northern Lights, Levi is the place to be.
Recognized as one of the largest ski resort areas, Levi is often celebrated as one of the best places in Finland for winter adventures. Upon your arrival, don your skis and glide down the slopes to enjoy the pristine, powdery snow. However, if skiing is not your forte, consider joining a reindeer safari, trying ice fishing, or simply relaxing in outdoor saunas.
Be prepared for the experience of transitioning from the hot sauna to cold water, a practice that may induce some excitement!
