Indeed, Santorini boasts stunning vistas, including its signature cave-style hotels, dramatic cliffs, striking sunsets from Oia, and authentic Greek cuisine.

To enrich your visit, the following are highly recommended activities to undertake during your stay in Greece.

1.) Watch the Sunset in Oia

Commence with one of the most iconic experiences by visiting Oia for a leisurely afternoon amble through this charming cliffside town.

If you are inclined to witness the sunset, you can either secure a vantage point within the town or reserve a table at one of the restaurants with a view. It is truly one of the best experiences in Santorini, albeit a very popular one.

Indeed, Oia can become rather crowded as sunset approaches, yet who could fault others for seeking such a memorable experience? To ensure an optimal spot overlooking the Caldera, it is advisable to arrive approximately 90 minutes ahead of sunset during peak times.

If large crowds are not to your liking, consider visiting the Monastery of Profitis Ilias situated at the island’s opposite end, where you can observe the sunset from a stunning vantage point. The panoramas from this location are breathtaking, affording views all around the Caldera, albeit not a close-up of the Oia cliffs.

2.) Grab a Tipple at Santo’s Winery

A getaway is hardly complete without sampling a glass of wine, or perhaps several.

Make your way to Santo Winery, where you can savor an assorted selection of exquisite Greek wines, accompanied by olives and light bites. It represents an enjoyable way to spend a relaxed afternoon. Be sure to partake responsibly—consider wine tasting etiquette where one typically does not drink all the poured samples. I personally enjoyed the experience perhaps a bit too much.

Alternatively, enroll in an organized winery tour that will navigate you through some of the most distinguished vineyards on Santorini. This option greatly enriched our experience and provided endless enjoyment.

Ensure to confirm participation in a winery tour prior to your arrival in Santorini, as tickets tend to sell out quickly during peak seasons.

3.) See the Real Atlantis

Over 3,000 years ago, a significant volcanic eruption resulted in the disappearance of a central portion of Santorini into the ocean, leading to the widespread belief that the island is the fabled location of Atlantis.

This monumental eruption, recognized as one of the largest in history, occurred approximately in 1600 BC.

Not only did the eruption contribute to the sinking of a substantial segment of Thera (formerly known as Santorini), but it also shaped an expansive crater resulting in the impressive cliffs of Santorini—fueling speculation about its correlation with the legend of Atlantis.

Over the past fifty years, archaeological research has uncovered sites such as the Akrotiri Archaeological Site, providing a glimpse into the island’s intriguing and relatively recent past. This site is well worth a visit to discover more about ancient settlements while enjoying the rich tapestry of history that Santorini presents.

A trip here will take approximately 45 minutes and is best paired with exploration of the southern coastline, as it is situated opposite the acclaimed town of Oia.

4.) Grab Some Local Food

Greece is celebrated for its exceptional cuisine, and Santorini is no exception. There are myriad local dishes to savor. Among the highlights are grilled souvlaki lamb and the delectable feta Saganaki, which is fried feta drizzled in olive oil and utterly delightful.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothing, as you may find yourself indulging a bit more than planned!

5.) Hike to the Top of Santorini Volcano

Put on your walking shoes and set sail to Nea Kameni island, the active heart of the volcanic region just off Santorini.

The barren volcanic landscape is still considered active yet dormant, providing a unique experience as you feel the warmth rising from the ground.

Additionally, boat tours often include a stop at the geothermal points situated around the island, where you can experience the lukewarm waters enriched with minerals, which might affect lighter colored swimwear.

6.) Visit Akrotiri Lighthouse

Located at the opposite end of the island from Oia, Akrotiri Lighthouse serves as a mesmerizing vantage point.

If you have access to a small vehicle or quad bike (which is a popular means of exploring the compact island), a visit is highly recommended.

Wander around the captivating coastline, relish the splendid views, and immerse yourself in the enchanting Greek ambiance. We particularly enjoyed visiting at sunset due to the calmer atmosphere compared to Oia.

Just ensure you have transportation arranged, as finding a taxi back may prove challenging.

7.) Sail Around Santorini

No visit to the Greek Islands, especially Santorini, would be complete without a memorable boat tour.

This is among the essential activities to undertake, particularly if time is limited or if you are on a day excursion from a cruise.

Numerous routes traverse the striking sections of the bay, including trips to the Volcanic Island, and allow moments for diving into the azure waters.

Moreover, most excursions include complimentary local Greek wines and Mythos beer to enjoy while you cruise along the dramatic cliffs of Santorini. We thoroughly enjoyed our time onboard.

Fira serves as the capital of Santorini, albeit in a more intimate manner than larger capitals found in Europe—it embodies the feel of a large village.

In spite of its small size, Fira boasts magnificent vistas, charming churches, and cobbled streets that are irresistible.

Also, take a moment to visit the Archaeological Museum of Thera for insight into the island’s history. Furthermore, you can find various delightful bars in Fira where you can unwind and observe the sunset, just remember to reserve a table in advance since they tend to fill rapidly during that time.

9.) Hike From Fira to Oia

Santorini is not just about picturesque pools and numerous servings of feta cheese.

Before my visit, this was indeed my perception of Santorini.

Upon discovering some of Santorini’s offerings, I was delighted to find astonishingly beautiful trails to follow, particularly the well-known Caldera trail connecting Fira and Oia.

Pack some comfortable shoes and hydrate adequately as you embark early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat.

10.) Visit the Quaint Village of Pyrgos

Pyrgos is a charming village that is perfect for a leisurely exploration lasting a few hours.

Time your visit for the morning, and be sure to stop at one of the local bakeries to pick up a Saganaki (a delightful fried cheese dish that I indulged in throughout my stay).

11.) Explore Megalochori

Megalochori is an intimate village that’s ideal for a few hours of exploration.

Arrive early and treat yourself to a local bakery’s offerings, including the irresistible Saganaki.

Exploring Megalochori will reveal its quaint charm, friendly locals, and picturesque streets, making it a delightful addition to any Santorini itinerary.

12.) Head to the Highest Point on Santorini

The peak of Profitis Ilias features a monastery and is a noteworthy destination during your Santorini exploration. Inside, you’ll discover beautifully adorned structures and can enjoy panoramic views across the island while sampling local delicacies available for purchase.
