Article Summary
The Jurassic Coast of England has been a long-anticipated destination for me, primarily because of its remarkable natural wonders such as Durdle Door and Old Harry Rocks. Additionally, I must admit that I hoped for the chance to discover some dinosaur fossils during my visit.
This coastal region is renowned for its fossil hunting, which greatly contributes to its status as England’s inaugural natural UNESCO World Heritage site.
Moreover, the Jurassic Coast is sprinkled with charming towns and villages from Devon to Dorset—our intended destination being Dorset—where none are quite as picturesque and quaint as Corfe Castle.
Upon approaching Corfe Castle, I initially perceived it as merely an impressive structure perched majestically on a hill. However, upon closer inspection, I discovered that it is not just a castle but a remarkably beautiful ancient village that dates back over 8,000 years! (Indeed! You read that correctly—8 THOUSAND, not 8 hundred.)
This castle dates back nearly a millennium, having been established by William the Conqueror in the 11th century and, despite being largely in ruins since its destruction in 1645, it remains an impressive sight.
During our journey to Dorset, we opted to drive from London, foregoing train travel to explore the wonders of the Jurassic Coast. While train options are available, including access to Corfe Castle via Wareham station, our choice to drive provided us with increased flexibility.
Having reached Durdle Door, we were immensely thrilled. The natural limestone arch stands majestically in the sea, presenting a breathtaking sight. The beach’s pristine waters and stunning landscapes make this locale a popular summer getaway for vacationers.
Afterward, we made our way toward Lyme Regis, where we would be lodging at the Hix Townhouse for several days. This Georgian townhouse boasts a reputation among many, particularly Londoners who often indulge in cocktails at Hix Bar in Soho.
The dining experience at the Hix Townhouse surpassed my expectations. When making reservations, I found the prices surprisingly reasonable, given the esteemed reputation of Mark Hix.
The exceptional dining experience continued with delicious cocktails and an exquisite selection of dishes, including the chorizo and buttermilk squid, which perfectly complimented the cocktails.
For main courses, I relished the lobster, while Lloyd selected the prawn cocktail followed by the piri piri mackerel, both of which were delectable.
Conclusively, the entire dining experience was exceptional, providing an ideal conclusion to what had already been an incredible afternoon of discovering remarkable British treasures.
The Jurassic Coast has thus far proven to be the perfect escape from London that I had anticipated.
