Breakfast on our final morning in the Cotswolds commenced, post a rejuvenating bath, with eggs royale for myself and soldiers for Lloyd. All accompanied by freshly brewed coffee.
The Royal Oak is a modest and cozy establishment, featuring only six rooms in total, greatly increasing the likelihood of encountering the owner during your stay.
*I had an unplanned encounter with them the previous day, while Lloyd had his own interaction earlier that morning, both completely oblivious at the time.
There is a sizable poodle, nearly as large as a Great Dane, which is truly endearing! This was the catalyst for realizing we had interacted with them at different moments without recognizing them.
In our conversation, they shared their journey of relocating from London years ago and their decision to revitalize the pub into the exceptional venue it is now.
They also mentioned the completion of renovations on a cottage across the road that is intended for holiday rentals. Their friends had been staying there to sample the experience, and with the departure of those guests that morning, they graciously invited us for a sneak peek.
Without hesitation, I accepted.
(*Recall my extensive days spent mentally house-hunting in the Cotswolds? This opportunity to view a home from the inside was too good to miss).
What an exceptional home it is.
It’s an enchanting location; every aspect made me long to own it. I am convinced that I will depart the Cotswolds with a rejuvenated aspiration to secure a property here.
The property was not primed for rental at the time of our visit, but it would be ready a few weeks later. I have already begun circulating the photos to friends in hopes of organizing a getaway here this summer.
Nonetheless, it was time to pack up and bid farewell to The Royal Oak.
Next, we ventured to the market town of Cirencester – a destination I had not previously visited but quickly grew fond of upon arrival.
We made a direct path towards Cirencester Church and the adjacent market for a brief exploration.
The church is every bit as impressive on the inside as it is on the outside!
If you visit during spring (or any subsequent time of the year), you can actually ascend the tower for breathtaking views of the town.
Regrettably, the tower was not accessible during our visit, so our perspective of the town was limited to ground level (*not that I’m complaining – it is undoubtedly a beautiful locale).
For the subsequent several hours, we simply indulged in a leisurely exploration of the town, pausing for tea and scones before continuing our journey through Cirencester.
The ambiance is charming, with a delightful blend of well-known retailers and unique independent shops.
Instead of merely describing it, allow me to present some visuals…
As we strolled through the streets, it became apparent that this town has much to offer.
Ultimately, we proceeded to The Fleece, where we would indulge in lunch—a must-visit when in the town.
(*Reservations in advance may be advisable; The Fleece is a sizable restaurant, but also quite popular. I witnessed several individuals leave in disappointment due to not having reserved a table, thus it would be prudent to ensure your spot ahead of time).
During lunch, I opted to indulge in various dishes from the menu.
Initially, I had not planned on such extravagance; however, after sampling the tempura with its exceptionally light batter, I knew instantly that this was the perfect venue to relish our lunch.
*For reference, Lloyd chose the duck as his starter.
For the main course, we both selected Fish and Chips, which featured the hallmark light batter and were truly exceptional. Gluttonously, I ordered a side of prawns served in garlic and chili oil, which were also quite delectable.
I realize I’ve mentioned this previously, yet I feel it’s unnecessary to tell you what we chose for dessert! I thought, “in for a penny, in for a pound” and opted for the sticky toffee pudding, whereas Lloyd selected the chocolate cake.
This sticky toffee pudding was adorned with the most generous helping of toffee sauce I’d ever encountered, and I thoroughly enjoyed it—there was not a single drop remaining by the conclusion of the meal.
Our final stop in the town was unexpectedly delightful. The detour was unplanned; we intended only to greet someone before experiencing a preview of an exciting new development arriving in Cirencester – a new theatre – which piqued my interest due to my fondness for theatrical productions in London.
Experiencing a mini-film there was truly astonishing; the sound quality is phenomenal, and I can envision the myriad spectacular live performances that will undoubtedly take place in this venue.
Additionally, the venue features a restaurant and a bar, which enhances the allure of an enjoyable evening out in the town. I sincerely hope to schedule a visit when we return with friends for that proposed getaway (*I also anticipate that there will be multiple venues to continue the festivities in Cirencester afterwards…).
And thus, our time in the Cotswolds has concluded once more—and what a splendid experience it was!
I genuinely enjoy spending time in the English countryside. The convenience of it all is appealing—even the journey back to London is merely an hour, and I am eager to undertake more such trips in the future.
England is resplendent, and I eagerly anticipate discovering many more hidden treasures.
