Ultimate Guide to Yacht Getaways: Explore Croatia Like a Pro

It was our second Yacht Getaways vacation, and it was just as memorable as the first. Last summer, we found ourselves sailing through the Ionian Islands of Greece in exquisite luxury, and upon learning that Yacht Getaways had another route through Croatia, we were eager to participate! We are excited to share our experience of our seven days aboard the Dubrovnik Explorer as we navigated up the Dalmatia coast to discover some of Croatia’s most picturesque cities.

About Yacht Getaways

Yacht Getaways provides a boutique cruising experience that is both luxurious and economically accessible. Prior to embarking on our cruise last year, I believed that sailing the Mediterranean Sea was an exclusive privilege for the affluent. However, with cruises starting at €1200, ordinary couples like us can indulge in the luxury of sailing the crystalline waters aboard our own private catamaran.

Along with four other couples, we boarded our catamaran, greeted by our Skipper Levi and Host Lauren, who catered to our every need while we enjoyed various adventures, including swimming at the Elaphiti Islands, e-biking through Mljet National Park, and exploring the historic towns of Korcula, Hvar, and Stari Grad. Each day was filled with both adventure and relaxation, commencing with Lauren preparing a delicious, hearty breakfast and a flavorful lunch as we navigated from island to island. Below, we outline what one can anticipate during a seven-day voyage from Dubrovnik to Split.

Day 1: Departure from Dubrovnik – Setting Sail in Style

Our journey commenced in the breathtaking city of Dubrovnik. We arrived a few days before our departure to explore the city that served as Kings Landing in Game of Thrones. While staying at the Dubrovnik Palace Hotel, we were able to escape the hustle and bustle, with a complimentary door-to-door shuttle service to the old town. After thoroughly enjoying all that the Old Town had to offer, we ordered an Uber to the Marina, where we boarded our private catamaran.

This experience is not your typical crowded Mediterranean cruise; Yacht Getaways delivers an intimate atmosphere with only a small number of guests onboard. Fortunately, we shared this journey with an excellent group of individuals. The international attendees included couples from New Zealand, the United States, Australia, and the UK, not to mention a couple from Canada. It was indeed a multicultural experience!

We sailed away from Dubrovnik promptly at 4 pm, relishing the azure waters and stunning scenery. After anchoring, we dove into the warm waters of the Elaphiti Islands as Lauren prepared our welcome dinner. This was merely an introduction to what was ahead: pristine waters, secluded coves, and ample opportunities for relaxation. That evening, we enjoyed our first dinner together while watching the sunset over the Adriatic.

Mljet National Park

There is nothing more rejuvenating than awakening to the gentle sound of waves while anchored near the pristine Elaphiti Islands. These islands are celebrated for their lush greenery and hidden beaches. Lauren prepared a fresh pot of coffee accompanied by an assortment of fruits, pastries, yogurt, and granola. Each morning was ideal for a refreshing swim or snorkel to invigorate ourselves for the day ahead. We floated in the serene waters as a hot breakfast was being prepared.

The beauty of Yacht Getaways lies in its flexibility—there is no need to rush. Some individuals eagerly anticipated a dip in the water, while others preferred to bask in the sun on deck, coffee in hand, before setting sail to our next destination.

Next, we explored Mljet, recognized as one of Croatia’s most beautiful and serene national parks. Renowned for its tranquil lakes and lush forests, Mljet is ideally explored by bike. With e-bikes at our disposal, even the steepest hills became manageable. We cycled along quiet paths amidst thick pine forests and around saltwater lakes, stopping occasionally to appreciate the tranquil environment. We even took a boat to explore the island’s 12th-century Benedictine Monastery, situated on a small island within the lake.

It was an exhilarating day on land, and upon our return, we relaxed aboard with cocktails and wine as we prepared for dinner ashore. This evening was perfectly suited for sampling Croatia’s renowned Under the Bell dish, featuring freshly caught seafood slow-cooked over an open fire.

Korcula – A Journey Back in Time

Continuing our sailing adventure, another highlight was the island of Korcula, often referred to as “Little Dubrovnik” due to its medieval walls and red-roofed structures. This charming walled city is also believed to be the birthplace of Marco Polo. This hidden gem attracted numerous tourists, creating a vibrant atmosphere. It is advisable to secure a reservation upon arrival, as restaurants fill quickly along the waterfront.

Meals Aboard Yacht Getaways

All breakfasts and lunches are incorporated into your Yacht Getaways cruise, along with two dinners. During each meal, beer, wine, soft drinks, and juices are provided, and all the water you may desire is also available aboard.

When preparing for your journey, it is prudent to bring a refillable water bottle. We also packed our coffee mugs. Should you desire additional spirits, options to purchase alcoholic beverages are accessible throughout the trip.

Hvar Town – Croatia’s Glitziest Island

Hvar is known as Croatia’s party haven; however, it offers much more than vibrant nightlife. We anchored outside its glamorous harbor and took a water taxi into town. The area is bustling with shopping, dining, and myriad happy hours. You have the option to hike up to the fort for an exquisite sunset view or head to Sunset Beach.

At each port of call, our host, Lauren, provided insights on activities to pursue, sights to behold, and optimal dining establishments. We appreciated not having to do any planning, as she directed us to the best happy hour, sunset spots, and exceptional meals. It truly simplifies the cruise experience.

In the evening, guests can choose to either revel in the lively nightlife offered by Hvar’s trendy bars or retreat to the yacht for a serene evening beneath the stars. With Yacht Getaways, the pace is entirely up to you.

Stari Grad – Discovering Croatia’s Oldest Town

Our favorite stop during the cruise was Stari Grad, one of Europe’s oldest towns, dating back to 384 BC. Despite its historical significance, Stari Grad is less populated than some of the other cities we visited. It provides a peaceful retreat with its narrow alleys, quiet cafés, and delightful local shops.

We meandered through the UNESCO-listed old town and became captivated by its winding alleyways. We were pleasantly surprised by the numerous local art galleries and quaint restaurants, which allowed us the opportunity to indulge in Dalmatian cuisine. This stop serves as a perfect counterpoint to the liveliness of Hvar, offering a tranquil and culturally enriching experience before your final day at sea.

During this stay, Yacht Getaways also provides a wine-tasting experience. Participation is optional, allowing you to immerse yourself in the city at your leisure. We docked right in town, with all restaurants and top attractions within walking distance.

Day 7: Sailing into Split – The Grand Finale

As we sailed toward Split, we enjoyed our last breakfast on deck, absorbing the final breathtaking vistas of the Dalmatian Coast. Although the journey was reaching its conclusion, the memories of the turquoise waters, historic towns, and unforgettable moments will endure long after disembarking.

Split, known as Croatia’s second-largest city, boasts the UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace and a vibrant coastal atmosphere. While we did not moor in Split, we ultimately ended our voyage in Trogir. Dave and I arranged for a hotel to experience this charming town, and we highly suggest spending a night here before continuing to Split.

Trogir serves as the perfect launch point for further exploration, whether your plans involve delving deeper into Croatia or venturing off to your next destination.

What to Pack

  • A refillable water bottle and a thermos-style coffee mug.
  • A portable USB power bank for device charging when shore power is unavailable.
  • A portable rechargeable fan, as air conditioning does not operate without shore power. While cabins are equipped with fans, an additional one enhances comfort during sleep.
  • Seasickness medication, if you are prone to motion sickness.
  • Soft, collapsible bags like duffel bags for ease of storage.
  • Organizational packing cubes are recommended due to limited cabin space.
  • A waterproof phone holder or GoPro for capturing moments while swimming.
  • Water shoes are advisable for accessing beaches, given that many Croatian beaches are rocky. Some individuals on our trip found their Keen shoes too heavy for swimming; we used Body Glove water shoes, which were fantastic.
  • A sun hat is essential to protect your face from the sun.
  • A long-sleeved shirt or snorkeling shirt can protect against sunburn while swimming.
  • Essential items like sunglasses, lip balm, and sunscreen are a must.
  • Keep packing minimal as the atmosphere is casual. A couple of sharp dress shirts for men and sundresses for women will suffice, as most of the time is spent in swimwear.
  • Bring shorts and shoes suitable for hiking and cycling, as the hiking trails are not overly demanding; running shoes will be adequate.
  • Consider packing several swimsuits, as swimming will be a frequent activity, and having a dry option is advantageous.

The Yacht Getaways Difference: Luxury and Adventure Combined

What distinguishes Yacht Getaways is its unique integration of adventure and luxury. Guests will have the opportunity to explore Croatia’s most scenic islands while enjoying the benefits of a private yacht. Below are some highlights that enhance this cruising experience:

  • Private Host: Your onboard host prepares fresh breakfasts and lunches daily, showcasing local ingredients to provide a taste of Croatia’s delectable cuisine.
  • Complimentary Beer and Wine: Relax with complimentary drinks throughout the cruise, whether enjoying a meal or taking in stunning views on deck.
  • Professional Skipper: A skilled skipper is responsible for navigating the yacht; hence, your focus can solely be on relaxation and the magnificent vistas.
  • Paddle Boards, Snorkeling Equipment, and Floaties: There is no need to bring your own snorkeling gear, as all necessary equipment is provided onboard for your enjoyment.

Daily activities on the cruise comprise swimming and snorkeling in secluded locations, combined with visits to fascinating destinations. Most nights, we docked right downtown, facilitating access to local nightlife. The experience is seamless, allowing you to concentrate on enjoying the trip of a lifetime.
