Koh Tao offers numerous exceptional activities and sights, making it an ideal destination for scuba diving, island hopping, lounging on pristine beaches, and relishing scenic viewpoints, all while avoiding the larger crowds often found in popular locations such as Phuket and the Phi Phi islands.
We dedicated almost an entire month to exploring the island last year, and it appeared that nearly every corner revealed breathtaking white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. Importantly, Koh Tao remains a budget-friendly destination.

How To Get To Koh Tao Island
Koh Tao is situated in the Gulf of Thailand, near the southern islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Samui.
As Koh Tao lacks an airport, the closest is located in Koh Samui (USM), which can be accessed via flights from Bangkok (BKK) or Phuket (HKT). From either Koh Samui or Koh Phangan, taking a ferry to Koh Tao is straightforward.
Alternatively, you could fly from either Bangkok airport to Surat Thani (URT) and then embark on a ferry to Koh Tao from there. You can search for flights within Thailand on Skyscanner.
Best Things To Do In Koh Tao
1. Koh Nang Yuan Viewpoint
Koh Nang Yuan consists of a pair of small islands positioned just off the west coast of Koh Tao. Although there are several activities available at Nang Yuan, the primary attraction is the viewpoint connecting the twin islands.
This viewpoint is arguably the most iconic in Koh Tao, renowned for its scenic beauty. It can be accessed via a boat from the northern tip of Sairee Beach, followed by a brief hike to reach the summit.

2. Mango Viewpoint
This popular viewpoint is situated near the peak of Koh Tao and offers excellent sunset vistas. There is an entrance fee of 100 Baht ($3).
The panoramic views extend to Sairee Beach in the distance and encompass the entire southern portion of Koh Tao. GPS coordinates here.
3. Summit Viewpoint
This secret viewpoint features a tree swing suspended from an immense banyan tree, with a 100 Baht entrance fee.
During our visit, we were the sole tourists present! The summit offers magnificent views overlooking the southern tip of Koh Tao. GPS coordinates here.
4. Wat Koh Tao Temple
This temple is the only Buddhist Wat on Koh Tao, which was completed in 2018.
Its Thai architectural style presents excellent opportunities for photography, and no specific attire is required for walking around or taking pictures from the exterior.

5. Shark Island
Shark Island is a small, rocky isle located near the eastern coast of Koh Tao, ideal for kayaking and snorkeling excursions.
The optimal starting point for kayaking to Shark Island is Sai Daeng Beach, as the distance is less than a kilometer.
From above, the island may appear as a mere cluster of rocks; however, it is distinguished for snorkeling and diving, as well as being a good location for swimming and capturing aerial photographs.
Kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented at Sai Daeng, and the paddle is relatively easy on a calm day, taking approximately 15 minutes.
A buoy is available on the island for securing your kayak while you snorkel, with the prime snorkeling areas located in the rocks along the northwest end of the island.
Despite its unassuming appearance, Shark Island is renowned as one of the premier snorkeling locations in Koh Tao!
6. John Suwan Viewpoint
This viewpoint ranks among the finest in southern Koh Tao. From the top, one can observe nearly the entirety of the island, flanked by expansive twin bays on either side.
It remains one of our preferred vantage points! The ascent takes about 15-20 minutes, and there is a 50 Baht entrance fee, although it can be evaded by visiting early in the day.

7. Ang Thong National Marine Park
This marine park encompasses a total of 42 exquisite islands in the Gulf of Thailand, and it can be conveniently accessed via a private day trip from Koh Tao or Koh Samui/Koh Phangan.
The stunning panorama from the Mu Ko Ang Thong viewpoint is more than sufficient reason to visit. Visitors can witness a multitude of diminutive islands cloaked in jungles, scattered across the azure horizon, resembling Thailand’s unique take on Raja Ampat.
It is celebrated as one of the most breathtaking views in the entire country!

8. Scuba Diving
Koh Tao has historically been regarded as one of the premier destinations worldwide for scuba certification.
While prices have increased somewhat due to a pricing structure that has emerged on the island, Koh Tao remains an economical choice for diving lessons, with numerous dive shops readily available.
Even certified divers can pursue advanced diving certifications or participate in underwater photography courses here.
9. Thai Massage
Massage establishments can be found on nearly every street corner in Koh Tao, with competitive pricing, averaging around 300 Baht ($10 USD) for an hour-long body massage.
This is an ideal method to relax following a day filled with hiking or diving activities.
10. Thai Food
A notable highlight of Thailand is its cuisine, and Koh Tao features a diverse array of restaurants and culinary options.
Regardless of your location within Koh Tao, you’ll have access to beloved Thai specialties, including Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong, and Pad Krapow.
If you wish to enhance your culinary skills, ample opportunities exist to take cooking classes where you can learn to prepare these dishes yourself!
West Koh Tao Beaches
11. Sairee Beach
Sairee Beach is the largest and most frequented beach on Koh Tao. If you seek white sand, swaying palm trees, and a picturesque setting to witness sunsets, this is the ideal location!
The shoreline is dotted with excellent dining options, hotels, dive shops, and various amenities. While it is a favorite spot for volleyball and swimming, the snorkeling here may not be as impressive as that found in other areas of the island.
A notable photo opportunity exists with the distinctively bent palm tree along the beach. It is recognized as one of the best sunset locations, making it worthwhile to remain there until nightfall.
Sairee Beach serves as the hub for boat taxis and marks the departure point for most excursions to Nang Yuan island.
This beach is located on the western shore of Koh Tao, just a short walk from Mae Haad Pier, the main pier where all ferry boats arrive.
12. Sai Nuan Beach
Sai Nuan Beach is one of the more tranquil spots on the island, rarely experiencing crowds, making it a perfect location for relaxing under the palms.
This beach is divided into two distinct areas, both equally charming and worth visiting! You can traverse between them via a short pathway among the palm trees or swim or kayak between the two within a few minutes.
It provides an excellent atmosphere for kayaking and snorkeling, serving as a valuable base for paddling to nearby locations such as Jansom Bay, Tao Thong Bay, and June Juea Beach.
Sai Nuan Beach is merely a 15-minute drive from the primary pier and tourist hotspots at Sairee Beach. The roadway is well paved but quite steep, which may pose a challenge for scooters unless you accelerate sufficiently.
BONUS: During the drive to Sai Nuan, there is a small pullover location within the palm trees offering breathtaking views of Koh Tao’s coast!
13. Koh Nang Yuan Beach
Koh Nang Yuan is a duo of small islands immediately adjacent to the western coastline of Koh Tao.
Numerous enjoyable activities are available at Nang Yuan. While the famed viewpoint is the standout attraction, the connecting sandbar between the islands also offers a pleasant area for sunbathing or swimming.
This experience is undoubtedly among the premier activities to enjoy in Koh Tao!

South Koh Tao Beaches
14. Freedom Beach
Freedom Beach Koh Tao is among the most favored and stunning beaches located at the southern end of Koh Tao.
It is exceptionally accessible and offers many opportunities for relaxation, snorkeling, kayaking, and photography of the idyllic tropical landscapes.
The area features two small beaches, which can be traversed along a brief pathway through the trees or can be kayaked between in just a few moments.
This location is highly sought after for kayaking, serving as a strong base for paddling to other nearby bays and beaches, including Chalok Baan Kao, Taa Toh Bay, and even Shark Bay.
Freedom Beach is just a 15-minute drive from the principal pier and popular sites at Sairee Beach. An entrance fee applies, yet one can often avoid it by arriving early in the morning.
15. Taa Toh Bay
Taa Toh Beach is one of the lesser-known areas located at the southern part of the island, yet it serves as an excellent place to unwind, loung on sunbeds, or enjoy a drink. Additionally, its west-facing orientation makes it an excellent spot for sunsets.
This site is perfect for sunbathing, snorkeling, and kayaking. Volleyball nets have also been set up for recreational activities.
Taa Toh is connected to Freedom Beach by a small boardwalk, facilitating easy access between the two.
16. Chalok Baan Kao Bay
Chalok Baan Kao is the second largest beach in Koh Tao, yet it is quieter and less congested than Sairee Beach because of its location to the south.
This area is ideal for relaxation, swimming, kayaking, and more. The sandy shore is soft, and the shallow waters make it suitable for families with children. A sandbar is also accessible when conditions permit.
Despite its tranquility, Chalok is equipped with an ample number of restaurants, bars, and dive shops nearby, along with a pharmacy and convenience store. The west-facing position ensures it is a favorable location for sunsets!
This beach is conveniently positioned close to other remarkable locations such as Shark Bay, Taa Toh Bay, and Freedom Beach.
17. Shark Bay
This bay showcases breathtaking turquoise waters and is one of the most sought-after snorkeling destinations on Koh Tao. The name derives from the friendly black tip reef sharks that frequent the area.
Two beaches are present here. The first is a long stretch of white sand bordered by palm trees, which is managed by Haad Tien Resort.
The second is a secluded beach concealed amidst the rocks, featuring soft sands, yet it is quite small, rendering it a mostly undiscovered beach.
Shark Bay is an excellent locale for snorkeling, kayaking, or simply relaxing on the beach. It ranks among my favorite spots for aerial photography of Koh Tao.
The vibrancy of the turquoise waters crashing against the rocks is awe-inspiring, becoming even more captivating from a bird’s-eye view!

Much of the coral within Shark Bay is not thriving; however, it remains a favorable site for snorkeling alongside black tip sharks and sea turtles.
You are almost guaranteed to encounter marine wildlife here, especially when venturing further out.
Generally, reef sharks are harmless and uninterested in human interaction as long as they are not disturbed.
18. Sai Daeng Beach
Sai Daeng presents a lovely white-sand beach adorned with shaded trees for lounging, along with views of Shark Island in the background.
Although it is not the largest beach on Koh Tao, it felt somewhat like a hidden gem during our visit due to its quiet atmosphere. A restaurant and a nice resort are available on-site for those wishing to linger.
Snorkeling here provides the opportunity to observe Christmas tree worms, amiable black tip sharks, and occasional sea turtles. The prime snorkeling spots are located at the western and eastern ends of the bay.
The pathway leading to the beach has some steep sections, yet it remains a well-maintained concrete road. Access to the beach is through the Sai Daeng Resort.
After completing your exploration of the primary areas of the bay, consider renting a kayak and venturing out to Shark Island for further adventures!
19. Ao Leuk Beach
Ao Leuk Beach is one of Koh Tao’s more frequented beaches, offering pristine sand and turquoise waters without being excessively remote. Amenities include a restaurant and an oceanfront resort for visitors wanting to stay a bit longer.
The water here possesses a distinctive shade of light blue, appearing almost luminescent. Unfortunately, there have been recent reports of litter at this location, so please make an effort to keep it tidy if you visit.
Snorkeling around the rocky borders of the bay is decent and can reveal vibrant reef fish and baby sharks.
Ao Leuk Beach is positioned on the southeastern aspect of Koh Tao, only a 10-minute drive from Sairee Beach.
The approach to the beach has steep and uneven stretches; therefore, it may be wise to park higher up the hill. Access is provided through the Aow Leuk Resort.
East Koh Tao Beaches
20. Ao Tanote Beach
Tanote is recognized as one of the finest beaches located on the eastern side of Koh Tao. It boasts outstanding views and snorkeling experiences while remaining uncrowded!
When snorkeling around Ao Tanote, anticipate encountering diverse fish and coral species, baby sharks, and potentially even manta rays. Snorkeling equipment and life vests are available for rent at adjacent restaurants.
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, a prominent boulder is situated in the middle of the bay, ideal for rock jumping at a height of approximately 10 meters (30 feet).
Tanote is conveniently only a 15-minute drive from the main pier and tourist hubs at Sairee Beach. The roadway is well maintained yet quite steep, so parking higher up may be advisable.
21. Hin Wong Beach
Hidden within a magnificent bay, Hin Wong Beach is situated on the eastern shore of Koh Tao. The coastline is lined with emerald palm trees and imposing boulders, and the area has yet to be overrun with tourists.
While a restaurant and a few small hotels are available, the area retains its charm without feeling overdeveloped, with most visitors arriving via boat tours.
The beach features a small expanse of sand for relaxation and offers kayak and snorkel rentals for those looking to explore the waters.
We heard that this beach is renowned for its exceptional snorkeling, and indeed it did not disappoint! While Intan enjoyed Candy Crush on the beach, I ventured to the bay’s southern edge, discovering schools of vibrant yellow fish, striking parrotfish, and captivating corals.
The most impressive corals and fauna appeared to be located further out in the bay, largely untouched by tour boats.
Hin Wong is located on the northeastern side of Koh Tao, and while the access road can be steep and rocky, parking is available at a higher elevation for free.
A nominal fee applies at the final parking area; however, parking farther up the hill is complimentary.
