Egypt offers far more than just the pyramids. Upon deeper exploration, one discovers a nation rich in ancient temples, monumental statues, archaeological museums, and much more.
During my two-week solo journey through Egypt in 2018, I was immensely impressed by the preservation of these remarkable sites. Each day presented a fresh adventure.
This article does not encompass every captivating site (as that would be unfeasible!) but highlights notable attractions. Below is a selection of the premier experiences to be had in Egypt.

North Egypt Things To Do
• Giza Pyramids
Undoubtedly, the pyramids! It is impossible to compile a list of essential activities in Egypt without mentioning these marvels from 2560 BC.
The Great Pyramids of Giza are merely a 30-minute drive from Cairo, and they represent one of the most captivating locations in Africa.

• Great Sphinx
The great Sphinx of Giza, characterized by its lion-like form and pharaoh head, is as renowned and magnificent as the pyramids themselves.
It is a brief walk from the pyramids and included in the same ticket, thus facilitating a visit to both attractions on the same day!

• Camel Rides
Camel riding is a favored activity in Egypt (as well as in other regions of North Africa and the Middle East), and what better backdrop for a photograph than atop a camel in front of the Great Pyramids?
These camels are amicable, and a 30-minute ride around the pyramids costs approximately 50 EGP (~$3 USD).

• Egyptian Museum
Egypt’s premier museum houses over 120,000 artifacts, including the famous gold mask of King Tut and numerous intriguing antiquities from ancient Egyptian civilization.
It is conveniently accessible and certainly merits a visit!
Central Egypt Things To Do
• Luxor Temple
The most accessible temple to visit in Luxor is—predictably—Luxor Temple.
This temple complex, dating back to 1400 BC, is situated right in the center of Luxor city, in close proximity to the airport and accommodations.

• Karnak Temple
Karnak was one of the most magnificent temples of ancient Egypt and remains one of the largest religious structures globally, featuring well-preserved statues, obelisks, and a hypostyle hall with exceptionally large pillars.
This temple is located on the northern outskirts of Luxor and is easily reachable from the city!

• Valley of the Kings
This necropolis located on the west bank of the Nile river served as the primary burial site for pharaohs and nobles of ancient Egypt, including King Tut.
Access to the Valley of the Kings from Luxor is straightforward, and the historical value makes it a worthwhile destination! Furthermore, the tomb walls are adorned with fascinating hieroglyphs.
• Hatshepsut Temple
Besides being among the most picturesque sites in Egypt, this remarkable temple is dedicated to the first female pharaoh of Egypt.
It is located on the west bank of Luxor, directly opposite the Valley of the Kings.

• Colossi of Memnon
These two colossal statues once stood sentinel at the tomb of King Amenhotep III, located near the Valley of the Queens.
Although the main tomb was destroyed in an earthquake around 1200 BC, the statues continue to endure.

• Medinet Habu Temple
This additional temple on the West Bank adjacent to Luxor is also noteworthy.
Madinat Habu is conveniently visited alongside Memnon and the Valley of the Queens, and it is renowned for possessing some of the most impressive inscriptions found in Luxor temples!

South Egypt Things To Do
• Philae Temple
Philae Temple, a Nubian structure, was relocated to a small island to safeguard it from flooding.
This temple is among the significant sites in southern Egypt, conveniently located near Aswan; it should not be overlooked during your exploration of the region!
• Kalabsha Temple
Another Nubian temple, Kalabsha, has also been transferred to a small island adjacent to the Aswan dam.
Accessible from Aswan, it boasts excellent painted reliefs located within the main temple.
• Abu Simbel Temple
Abu Simbel, with its grand pharaonic statues, is an extraordinary temple located in the far southern part of Egypt, near the Sudan border.
This location was among my most cherished destinations in Egypt. While more difficult to access than others, the experience is undoubtedly rewarding!
