Rwanda is frequently referred to as the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills,’ a designation that becomes apparent to anyone who visits its capital, Kigali. The undulating terrain serves as a cornerstone of the city’s identity, offering breathtaking vistas that can be appreciated from nearly any location. As night descends, the celestial dome harmonizes with the twinkling lights from residences, offices, and edifices that compose the skyline. There is an abundance of activities to engage in and sights to behold in these Kigali hills; here are the highlights that you will remember long after your visit:

Start with understanding and remembrance

The 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi marks one of the most painful and pivotal episodes in Rwandan history. Within a mere span of 100 days, an estimated one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus were systematically exterminated. The Kigali Genocide Memorial pays tribute to approximately 250,000 individuals interred in mass graves and hosts a commendable exhibition aimed at elucidating why the international community remained largely passive during those harrowing events.

To fully appreciate Kigali’s impeccable security, immaculate streets, and dynamic nightlife without grasping the broader historical context would be a disservice to oneself; therefore, dedicating the initial segment of your day to reflection is advisable. This profoundly impactful memorial is an ideal venue for reconciling with Rwanda’s tragic past and the broader narrative of genocidal violence worldwide.

Allocate several hours for your visit to inspire a deeper understanding of the atrocities from 30 years ago and to honor the memories of the lives that were tragically lost within these poignant exhibitions.

Get a taste of the world in Kimihurura

When lunchtime arrives, an abundance of choices awaits you. Over the last ten years, Kigali’s culinary environment has experienced a renaissance, with a proliferation of restaurants, cafes, and bars throughout the city. The liberalization of Rwanda’s visa regulations, allowing nearly any nationality to obtain a visa upon arrival, has facilitated an influx of expatriates eager to establish roots, bringing diverse culinary traditions along with them.

Kigali has also witnessed the resurgence of many former diaspora, such as Nathalie and John, the proprietors of Poivre Noir, a well-regarded Belgian-inspired bistro characterized by a fusion flair. Located in Kimihurura, a neighborhood increasingly recognized for its esteemed dining establishments, Poivre Noir is among a variety of noteworthy options. These include Repub Lounge, specializing in East African cuisine; Indabo, known for its health-conscious bowls and snacks (featuring a charming dog park); Borneo Indonesian, which offers spicy favorites like beef rendang and gadogado; and Patisserie Royale, a popular bakery and cafe.

While these establishments provide excellent options for a delightful lunch, they are merely the surface of what is available—there exists a plethora of venues to enjoy Rwandan specialties as well as Middle Eastern, Italian, Asian, and more, all within a convenient, walkable radius of several parallel streets.

Outdoor experiences and artistic appreciation

Burn off your lunch at Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-Park, Kigali’s inaugural completed initiative aimed at rejuvenating the biodiversity of urban wetland ecosystems. Since its inauguration in 2022, the park boasts serene pathways adorned with parks, flower gardens, and bamboo-lined trails. A section is even dedicated to showcasing the medicinal flora traditionally employed by Rwandans to address various health concerns.

Bicycles are available for rental for those who prefer a more active exploration, and informative signage in both Kinyarwanda and English accompanies each species throughout the park. For additional insights about the park and to join weekly yoga classes, consider checking out Live Well Rwanda.

Exploring one of Kigali’s exceptional art studios offers a wonderful opportunity to delve into the city’s cultural fabric. Indiba Arts Space, Niyo Arts Center, Kigali Deaf Art Gallery, and Choose Kigali each present unique perspectives of the Kigali experience and spirit as expressed by talented local artists.

All of these venues are commendable options, though our preferences lean toward the Kigali Deaf Art Gallery and Choose Kigali. The former features (and is predominantly run by) gifted deaf artists, renowned for their meticulously crafted beaded portraits and accessories. In contrast, Choose Kigali offers a luxurious environment housing celebrated Rwandan artist Emmanuel Nkuranga’s curated collection.

Dinner and a view

The Choose Kigali gallery also serves as a restaurant and guesthouse, featuring esteemed chefs and offering exceptional views of the city, making it a superb choice for dinner. Alternatively, return to the culinary hub of Kimihurura, or explore the Rugando neighborhood, which showcases delectable dining opportunities such as Choma’d for remarkable barbecue in a relaxed setting, Habesha for genuine Ethiopian dishes in a tranquil atmosphere, and Inka Steakhouse for gourmet meals with a stylish patio view.

Kigali is characterized by stunning vistas, with picturesque locations available at nearly every turn. That being said, while Kimihurura is a culinary hotspot, Rebero is renowned for its magnificent panoramic views.

Perched atop a hill, Rebero offers some of the most breathtaking and expansive perspectives of the entire city. Consider visiting Eagle View Lodge for a drink or meal with a view, or simply meander up the hill to enjoy the scenery along the way. For an optimal experience, time your visit around dusk to witness the city transition from daylight to a vibrant, illuminated landscape.

Keep the fun going in Kigali’s nightlife scene

Having accomplished much in a single day, you can confidently declare that you have experienced the city, but now it is time to conclude the evening with social interactions, live music, and enjoyment. Return to Kimihurura (for good reason!) or explore the vibrant neighborhood of Remera.

In Kimihurura, enjoy a drink with a view and a lively atmosphere at Boho, renowned for its breezy, indoor-outdoor vibe. Another favored venue is Lavana, which hosts live performances, prominent DJs, movie nights, and signature tequila cocktails. For those seeking to connect and dance the night away, the popular nightclub, La Noche, beckons.

Conversely, Remera features a trendy strip lined with a variety of bars and clubs that cater to diverse musical tastes and atmospheres, perfect for sampling various venues to find your ideal ambiance.

Regardless of your choice, this presents an ideal opportunity to conclude a memorable day filled with the rich history, warmth, diversity, and beauty that this remarkable city has to offer.
