Tour Du Rwanda

Attention cycling enthusiasts! The Tour Du Rwanda stands as one of Africa’s premier cycling events and continues to expand in prestige and participation each year. Rwanda’s renowned rolling hills provide an exceptional landscape that combines challenge with breathtaking beauty, fostering a thriving local cycling culture and attracting competitors globally.

The Tour du Rwanda commenced in 1988 but gained significant momentum in 2008 when it partnered with international organizations to elevate the local event onto the global stage. This spectacular event spans eight days and encompasses four picturesque provinces, featuring 20 teams and approximately 100 cyclists from around the globe. The Tour Du Rwanda not only captivates spectators but also inspires cyclists striving for excellence. In 2023, the competition took place in February.

The Walk to Remember

On April 7th each year, Rwanda observes ‘Cyunamo’, a week-long remembrance period honoring the victims of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi. During this time, celebratory events and loud assemblies are discouraged, with restaurants and bars limiting their hours to show respect for the mourning period.

One pivotal event, ‘The Walk to Remember’, which has been held since 2009, includes a community march from the Rwanda Parliament building to the Amahoro National Stadium. Initially a youth initiative aimed at educating young individuals about genocide and the significance of countering genocide ideology, it has evolved to welcome thousands of citizens, diplomats, visitors, and often the President and First Lady of the Republic.

Despite the event’s solemn purpose, it fosters an uplifting atmosphere, with 2024 marking three decades of peace since the genocidal events of 1994.

Ubumuntu Arts Festival

The Ubumuntu Arts Festival unites artists from various disciplines worldwide to celebrate humanity (the literal translation of Ubumuntu) through artistic expression. Annually, this festival features captivating performances, encompassing dance, drama, and music pieces designed to reflect the shared attributes that transcend races, cultures, and beliefs.

The festival’s after parties are equally engaging! As it approaches its 10th anniversary in 2024, the theme will be ‘Integrity: Resilience in the Face of Adversity,’ a reminder from the event’s founder, Hope Azeda, to stay committed to our values and embody resilience amidst challenges.

Kwita Izina

Every September, Rwanda commemorates its dedication to preserving the nation’s remarkable mountain gorillas through a ceremonial naming event for the newborn gorillas of the year. Since 2005, nearly 400 baby gorillas have received names.

This charming tradition, known as Kwita Izina, is rooted in a long-standing Rwandan cultural practice in which family members and friends partake in naming a newborn child. The tradition found renewed significance since its inaugural gorilla naming ceremony in 2005, transforming into an eagerly awaited global event embraced by conservationists and local communities alike.

Each year, renowned individuals—from researchers to gorilla trackers, medical professionals, celebrities, and advocates—are chosen to name the gorillas. In celebration of the 20th anniversary next year, the Rwanda Development Board aims to invite as many previous namers back as possible, alongside innovative new namers, to honor the remarkable recovery of a once critically endangered species.

This overview merely scratches the surface. Regardless of your timing, there is always something exhilarating occurring in Rwanda.
