Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA

The ambiance: Extended runs, challenging terrain, relaxed atmosphere, Led Zeppelin

Experiencing the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram, regarded as the most iconic ski lift in the United States, is exhilarating. This 100-person gondola features music curated by the operator—imagine classics by AC/DC and Led Zeppelin filling the air. As you ascend, enjoy a breathtaking view of the forthcoming skiing terrain: steep couloirs, exceptional glade skiing, and wide-open bowls.

Jackson Hole is quite remote, allowing for an immersive experience focused solely on the mountain, and this is precisely what many seek.

Aspen, Colorado, USA

The ambiance: Affluent visitors, refined tastes, expertly-trained young skiers

Aspen has earned its reputation as a premier ski destination over the past half-century. This luxurious former mining town boasts phenomenal runs suitable for every family member, complemented by four distinct mountain areas. Buttermilk is recognized as one of the country’s foremost beginner-friendly slopes, featuring highly regarded instructors at the ski and snowboard academy.

Additionally, expect challenging steep pistes, deep chutes, and remarkable bowls in the Aspen Highlands and Snowmass areas. After a brief hike to the summit of the 12,392ft (3777m) Highlands Bowl, exhilarating inbounds runs await.

Following your time on the slopes, attention shifts to high-end fashion, gourmet dining, and cultural pursuits. It is advisable to dress the part.

Whistler-Blackcomb, British Columbia, Canada

The ambiance: Abundant powder days, heli-skiing, close to a major city

With over 200 marked runs and an astonishing 8171 acres (33 sq km) of skiing terrain—which includes 16 expansive alpine bowls and three glaciers—Whistler-Blackcomb stands as potentially the largest ski resort in the western hemisphere. The resort’s Peak 2 Peak gondola holds the record as the highest and longest globally, offering unparalleled exhilaration as one descends the mountain that hosted numerous alpine events during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Experienced skiers and snowboarders will appreciate the substantial amounts of heavy coastal powder and long runs, while families will be drawn to the entertaining kids’ areas and activities in the village. Whistler-Blackcomb is conveniently located just 78 miles (125km) from the vibrant city of Vancouver, providing a wealth of cultural experiences nearby.

Alta, Utah, USA

The ambiance: Exceptional powder conditions, a skier-focused community

Alta boasts significant advantages—especially for skiers, as snowboarding remains prohibited. The area receives an impressive annual snowfall of approximately 550 inches. Being situated in Utah, this destination features the driest, lightest snow available.

The après-ski environment is relatively low-key, yet the extensive vertical drops of over 2000ft (609m) and 2614 acres (10.5 sq km) of skiing territory leave little time for partying. Additionally, many iconic skiing scenes from the 1980s film Better Off Dead were filmed at the resort’s scenic slopes. As Charles de Mar states in the film, “This is pure snow. Are you aware of the street value of this mountain?”

Palisades Tahoe, California, USA

The ambiance: Nostalgic charm and California sunshine

Located near the pristine shores of Lake Tahoe—which boasts the highest concentration of ski resorts in the United States—this remarkable mountain, formerly known as Squaw Valley, was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. The midsize mountain retains a nostalgic appeal, offering a well-rounded mix of terrain suitable for all skill levels, including impressive steeps like the KT-22 and a top-notch terrain park equipped with jumps, rails, and freestyle features.

With around 30 lifts, the resort efficiently transports skiers across its 4000 skiable acres. Prospective visitors should note that California snow can sometimes become dense and firm shortly after falling; however, substantial snow accumulation of up to 3 feet is not uncommon. Palisades also provides opportunities to showcase your flair and Californian style. With Santa Cruz just five hours away, skiing and surfing on the same day is an enticing possibility.

Proceeding to Blue Sky Basin reveals forest skiing complemented by short, exhilarating steeps.

Vail caters to both young adventurers and families, as its frontside presents an ample variety of beginner and intermediate terrain.
