Top 5 Must-Visit Destinations for First-Time Travelers

Where to Go if You’ve Never Traveled Before

Embarking on a global journey for the first time can be a formidable endeavor, regardless of your level of confidence. You are venturing into the vast unknown—into a destination where the language may be unfamiliar. How will you navigate? What if you struggle to make acquaintances? What if you encounter fraud? What if unforeseen complications arise?

For novice travelers, my recommendation is to initially explore a country that is straightforward for travel. Avoid diving into less-traveled destinations without adequate support. Instead, consider visiting locations that feature established tourist routes, enabling easier navigation and enhancing your capacity to engage fully with your surroundings.

Here are five of my top recommendations.

Thailand

Pai, in Thailand. Lauren Juliff

Southeast Asia is undoubtedly the most accessible region to explore for first-time travelers. It is exotic, thrilling, cost-effective, and importantly, user-friendly.

In Southeast Asia, you are assured of forming connections with fellow travelers. It is a common rite of passage for backpackers globally, with a distinct path well-trodden for you to follow. If I must focus on a single country, my choice would be Thailand. With its stunning beaches, a plethora of travelers to socialize with, a rich cultural history, numerous temples, delectable cuisine, affordability, and ease of transport, it’s a destination that captivates. Moreover, you will find that many locals speak English, facilitating communication… have I convinced you yet?

Visit Thailand as your inaugural destination, and you will depart with cherished memories and an abundance of new acquaintances. I have yet to encounter anyone who hasn’t thoroughly enjoyed their experience.

Mexico

If you prefer not to venture too far, consider traveling to Mexico. Despite its image in various regions of the United States, Mexico can be a remarkably safe environment for tourists who opt to remain within tourist-centric areas.

Locations such as Playa del Carmen and Tulum are excellent for socializing, particularly with a host of Americans enjoying beach activities. Additionally, these areas are conveniently situated near numerous Mayan ruins, adding a cultural element to your visit.

For those seeking a respite from beach frenzy, Guanajuato is a suitable choice, particularly for those eager to enhance their linguistic skills. Although English is not prevalent, the locals are amiable and understanding when you endeavor to practice your Spanish.

Sayulita, a vibrant surfing locale along the Pacific Coast, is populated by many travelers. It offers a more laid-back, bohemian atmosphere, featuring affordable dining options, a picturesque beach, and plenty of neighboring towns to discover.

Traveling within Mexico is uncomplicated via ADO buses—some of the finest I have experienced! The cuisine is affordable and delightful, and the residents are warm and hospitable. Overall, it is also incredibly cost-effective.

New Zealand

Black Sand Beach in New Zealand. Lauren Juliff

Why choose New Zealand over Australia? It offers greater diversity, the locals are notably friendlier, and it is more budget-friendly. New Zealand serves as a superb destination for your inaugural international journey!

If the thought of speaking a foreign language feels intimidating, this destination is ideal. New Zealand shares numerous cultural similarities with the United States, minimizing the risk of culture shock.

Joining one of the economical hop-on hop-off backpacker buses spanning both islands is an effective way to meet fellow travelers. It simplifies transportation, fosters friendships, and allows for organized excursions.

Spain

The Alhambra, Spain. Lauren Juliff

Spain ranks among my favorite destinations in Europe, not solely due to its affordability but also its remarkable variety of experiences. From pristine beaches to majestic mountains, historic castles to vibrant urban landscapes, Spain possesses an abundance to explore.

The gastronomy is exceptional! The culinary offerings are budget-friendly, especially in cities like Granada, where patrons receive complimentary tapas with each drink order. The cuisine predominantly features jamon, cheese, and fresh bread.

Understanding public transportation in Spain is straightforward. Major urban centers boast metro systems and extensive bus networks. Traveling long distances between cities is equally hassle-free, with robust bus and train services connecting virtually all desired destinations.

Did I mention the delectable jamon?

Slovenia

Lake Bled, Slovenia. Lauren Juliff

Though Slovenia may not frequently appear on lists of prime destinations, it happens to be my personal favorite! Visitors to this enchanting country become enamored with its many offerings, making it an exemplary choice for novice travelers.

Slovenia is a scenic wonder. Witness the images I captured during my time in Ljubljana and Bled. Within just a few hours, you can journey from a colorful urban environment to breathtaking snow-capped mountains, glimmering alpine lakes, the beaches of Piran, captivating caves, and vineyard-dense countryside. Regardless of your scenic preference, Slovenia accommodates all.

The local populace in Slovenia is exceptionally welcoming. English is widely understood, and the cuisine is approachable. Moreover, public transit is user-friendly. The country has a vibrant artistic scene, with music prevalent on every street. Slovenia is particularly well-suited for those who may not have extensive travel experience.
