Traveling from London to Amsterdam by Bus

In this post, after having traveled to Amsterdam by car, plane, train, and bus, I weigh up the pros and cons of making the journey from London to Amsterdam by bus.

The cost of traveling by bus is approximately £15 per person from London (Victoria Coach Station) to Amsterdam (Amstel Station). If you plan ahead (around a month), this can be an economical option. Here’s how it compares to other modes of transport:

• Train: Prices start from about £75 per person;
• Car: Considering petrol and the ferry, costs will be at least £78. While driving might be costly, sharing a rental 8-seater car with friends could provide comfort and save on transportation costs.
• Plane: Flights start at around £20 if booked through reputable flight comparison sites. However, this option often has hidden costs related to luggage and environmental impact.

Although flying only slightly increases the cost, numerous additional expenses come into play. For instance, with bus travel, you can carry considerably more luggage without hefty fees, and you have the benefit of taking liquids up to reasonable limits. Additionally, buses operate from the center of London straight into the heart of Amsterdam, eliminating any further transport costs. Conclusion: Apart from hitchhiking, bus travel remains the most affordable option between London and Amsterdam without hidden charges.

One notable downside of bus travel is duration. Buses can be slow as they stop for passengers and driver swaps. The total journey time for our bus ride from London was 11 hours, including a one-hour time difference between the UK and the Netherlands.

Conversely, trains and flying usually take about 5 hours, while flights require additional time for airport procedures. Our enjoyable 9 am arrival in Amsterdam allowed us to explore the city during daylight, without the hassle of catching a ride from the airport.

While bus sleeping conditions may not be top-notch, most of our time was spent either resting or engaging in light reading. Subsequently, upon arrival, though slightly sleep-deprived, we felt rejuvenated and ready to explore, reinforcing the idea that bus travel, while longer, has its perks.

Our experience began at London Victoria Station, where the atmosphere is often not the most welcoming, characterized by a bustling crowd. People must queue and show passports before boarding, so don’t forget to bring yours!

The boarding process may turn into a scramble, as there can be a rush to secure seats. Thankfully, our driver was entertaining and made the journey easier with comedic commentary. After we disembarked in Dover for a passport check, our bus continued seamlessly onto a ferry, where many passengers attempted to catch some slumber.

Despite some unrest over seating arrangements, most passengers eventually settled and drifted into sleep mode until we reached Amsterdam.

After arriving, Amsterdam greeted us with its vibrant charm—definitely a city worth visiting despite the travel time. So, is bus travel the right choice for you? In our opinion, Yes! The affordability, coupled with the unique experience of the journey, makes it an appealing option. Here are some travel tips for your bus ride:
