Top 3 Bangkok-Siem Reap Border Scams and How to Avoid Them

Crossing the Thai-Cambodian Border: A Comprehensive Guide

We carefully considered whether to fly or take the bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap. We were eager to take the bus since it’s more environmentally friendly. However, we were deterred by the scams reported at the Thai-Cambodian border. Ultimately, we opted for the bus because we determined that the worst-case scenario would be losing a few bucks to a crafty scammer.

We researched extensively on how to avoid scams during the Bangkok to Siem Reap journey, watching numerous YouTube videos. We are grateful for the guidance we received and aim to provide similar support to others looking to traverse from Thailand to Cambodia without falling victim to scams.

What You’ll Learn in This Guide

  • The Three Scams at the Thai-Cambodian Border
  • The Three Steps to Crossing the Thai-Cambodian Border

These steps are vital for a smooth passage as the process can be confusing due to the bustling environment. However, once you’re familiar with the steps, crossing the border becomes straightforward. Here’s an outline of our experience, detailing the scams and the necessary steps in chronological order.

How to Get to Siem Reap from Bangkok

Before embarking on the journey, it’s important to consider how to get to the border. There are multiple options:

  • Drive or hitch-hike
  • Take a bus from Bangkok to Poipet, then another bus/taxi from Poipet to Siem Reap
  • Take a direct bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap (with a stop in Poipet)
  • Fly from Bangkok to Siem Reap
  • Take the train to Amphoe Aranyaprathet, then a taxi to Poipet followed by a bus to Siem Reap
  • Cycle, if you’re up for a 400km challenge!

Although there are several options, the bus routes from Morchit Bus Station are convenient and often preferred.

Scam 1: Avoid ‘Fast’ Track Services

Despite feeling prepared from our research, we encountered our first scam even before reaching the border. As we rode the bus, an associate of the bus driver attempted to sell ‘fast track’ services for a price. This was concerning as we had already paid for our bus and were aware of the visa costs.

Admittedly, the inclination to utilize the ‘fast track’ service was strong, given the rain and the pressure from other passengers. However, we remembered that reviews indicated passengers who opted out were often back on the bus before those who had. Therefore, we opted not to pay extra, got off the bus, and managed the visa process ourselves effectively.

Tip: Make sure you have passport photos ready before your journey to avoid unnecessary fees from unscrupulous individuals.

Step 1: Exit Thailand

The first step is to stamp out of Thailand. After disembarking, you’ll navigate through a crowd towards the official exit area. However, brace yourself for scam 2.

Scam 2: Avoid Unofficial Visa Assistance

Upon exiting the bus, you may be approached by individuals urging you to obtain a Cambodian visa before checking out of Thailand. Thanks to our research, we knew it was essential to exit Thailand first. Thus, we declined their assistance and proceeded to the official stamping location.

Step 2: Obtain Your Cambodian Visa

After successfully exiting Thailand, follow the signs to the visa area. It can feel chaotic, so maintain focus on the official signs. Once inside the designated building, you can apply for your visa.

Scam 3: Stick to the Official Visa Fee

In the visa processing area, we were surprised when the officials requested a visa fee of $33 instead of the standard $30. This was unexpected and frustrating, but we stood firm and communicated that we would only pay $30 as stated. Eventually, we were able to proceed with the correct payment despite some temporary delays.

Step 3: Enter Cambodia

The final step to a smooth crossing involves stamping into Cambodia. Surprisingly, this step was brisk, with no scams encountered.

Once all the formalities were taken care of, we returned to the bus—we were back on before many who had paid extra for expedited services.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, we outlined three scams and three essential steps for successfully navigating the Thai-Cambodian border on your way to Siem Reap. Remember, never pay more than $30 for your visa, and remain vigilant throughout the process. We enjoyed our time in Cambodia immensely, one of our favorite countries in Southeast Asia.
