Exploring Europe on a Memorable Cruise with Mom

GoTravelDaily’s Mediterranean Cruise Experience

GoTravelDaily’s Senior Director of Content recently returned from an 11-day cruise through the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas. Here she shares some highlights from the trip, and some advice for traveling with an older parent.

For as long as I can remember, my 83-year-old mom has wanted to see Positano, Italy. She’s not alone; this picturesque spot on the Amalfi Coast has drawn everyone from Goethe to John Steinbeck to Jacqueline and Aristotle Onassis – its appeal and popularity are undeniable.

I’ve been wracking my brain for years about how to get her there, if only for an afternoon, but it was a daunting task. Then I discovered a GoTravelDaily cruise through Europe that stopped in Sorrento (a short drive to Positano), and I decided to take the plunge despite concerns about the crowds and heat we might encounter. We booked the trip in May, eagerly anticipating our departure from Rome at the end of June.

Even before we confirmed our plans, I thought extensively about all the logistics involved in traveling with an older parent—scheduling flights, managing packing lists, organizing excursions, and making necessary reservations. This process wasn’t always easy, but we both enjoyed an unforgettable experience spending quality time together while exploring new destinations.

Essential Trip Details

Here’s a quick overview of the key details that I hope help you plan a similar trip:

  • When to arrive: It’s advisable to give yourself at least one full day before your cruise leaves to ensure a smooth start. I arrived two days in advance to enjoy a day in Rome.
  • How to get from the airport: If you’re mobile and strong enough to handle your baggage, consider taking the train. I arranged for a car and driver for Mom, who had a lengthy layover traveling from the West Coast.
  • Getting around town: While I walked everywhere in Rome, my mom needed to rely on taxis for convenient transportation.
  • Where to stay: Options include staying near the cruise port, which is located in Civitavecchia (about 90 minutes from Rome city center). I stayed at a lovely hotel near Piazza del Popolo during my two nights in Rome.
  • What to pack: I focused on light and breathable clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes to ensure a pleasant experience during the summer heat.

What Cruise Did You Take?

We experienced an 11-night cruise aboard a GoTravelDaily ship, the Silver Whisper. Our journey began in Civitavecchia, Rome, visiting numerous breathtaking ports along the way including Sorrento, Trapani in Sicily, Tunis in Tunisia, Valletta in Malta, Monopoli in Italy, Kotor in Montenegro, and Korčula in Croatia. We concluded our adventure in Venice, from where we flew home.

What Was the Most Touristy Thing You Did?

Our day trip along the Amalfi Coast was what I expected; it was challenging but also the main purpose of our trip. We opted for a special add-on excursion that brought us by minibus to Positano.

Our excursion commenced at 9 a.m., taking a tender to the port in Sorrento where we met our guide. The drive to Positano was remarkably short, yet the scenery was splendid. Arriving early helped us avoid heavy traffic, allowing us to stroll around Positano shortly after our arrival.

Upon stepping into the town, I faced my initial fears: an overwhelming crowd and heat. As my mother uses a cane, navigating the steep and uneven paths of this seaside haven required a slow pace, making frequent stops to find shade and rest.

Despite the challenges posed by the crowds, we eventually arrived at the beach, where we could briefly enjoy a respite from the throngs of tourists. Our excursion also included a delightful lunch at a luxury hotel, where we dined with stunning views of the water and the surrounding picturesque buildings.

The food was everything my mother had dreamed of, and we left Positano feeling satisfied and happy.

The Handiest Thing You Packed?

The most beneficial item I packed was a wide-brim raffia hat I purchased just before departing. It became an essential accessory that I wore every day, offering comfort and protection from the strong sun.

Your Favorite Port?

Korčula in Croatia stood out as my favorite port. Without a fixed agenda, I fell in love with the island the moment we arrived. Exploring the old town, with its labyrinthine streets and stunning vistas, was a pleasure. It was quiet and serene compared to other bustling tourist destinations.

The highlight of my visit was enjoying a peaceful lunch beside the waterfront, allowing us to mesmerize ourselves with the beautiful scenery and local culture.

The Best Meal?

During our time in Monopoli, Italy, we had the pleasure of dining at the charming Locanda sul Porto. The attentive staff and delicious menu made this experience stand out. Fresh seafood pasta paired with refreshing drinks made for a lovely lunch.

Best Tip for Someone Planning a Similar Trip

While on board the GoTravelDaily cruise, it’s crucial to secure reservations for restaurants, spa treatments, and excursions in advance. Unfortunately, we were a bit late in planning, which limited our options for on-shore dining and relaxation opportunities. However, we enjoyed wonderful meals, particularly at La Dame, the exquisite French restaurant on the ship.

In conclusion, traveling with an older parent can provide invaluable bonding moments. Plan ahead to ensure a smooth experience, and don’t hesitate to create lasting memories as you explore beautiful locales together.
