Ultimate Local Guide to Exploring Svalbard

Insider Tips for Exploring Svalbard with Cecilia Blomdahl

Celebrity influencer Cecilia Blomdahl has captured the magic of life in Svalbard, Norway. Known for its stunning glaciers and unique Arctic environment, this remote region feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of mainland life. Most tourism in Svalbard centers around Longyearbyen, affectionately referred to as “the village” by locals, which proudly holds the title of the world’s northernmost city.

Originally hailing from Sweden, Cecilia moved to Svalbard for what she thought would be a short three-month respite. Nearly nine years later, she continues to call this beautiful place home, living in a cozy cabin just outside Longyearbyen with her boyfriend, Christoffer, and their dog, Grim. Currently, they are enjoying the mesmerizing Polar Day, a season characterized by 24 hours of daylight from mid-April to late August. In contrast, Polar Night brings 24/7 darkness from the end of October to January.

Pros and Cons of Visiting Svalbard

Deepa: What are the pros and cons of visiting during Polar Day vs. Polar Night?

Cecilia: If it’s your first visit, summer is ideal due to milder weather, allowing for incredible boat trips through the fjords to observe abundant wildlife. Conversely, adventurous travelers might prefer the sunny winter months (March to May) for exhilarating snowmobile excursions through the stunning Arctic landscapes, offering an authentic, raw experience.

Winter’s unique light creates a charming atmosphere, ideal for those who wish to experience continuous darkness during Polar Night. However, visibility for nature and wildlife is limited at this time, making it less optimal for observing the breathtaking surroundings.

Dealing with the Midnight Sun

Deepa: You describe Polar Day as “zombie season” due to its exhausting nature. How can travelers manage this?

Cecilia: Summer brings boundless energy; every day feels endless under the sun. However, it can be quite taxing on the body, as you may find it hard to nap even when you’re tired. I recommend bringing a sleeping mask to enjoy a good night’s sleep amidst the lively atmosphere. The surreal experience of seeing the sun at midnight is unforgettable!

My Perfect Day in Svalbard

Deepa: How do you and Grim spend an ideal day during the Midnight Sun?

Cecilia: I’m collaborating with Peet’s Coffee on their new Bright Collection, which includes an exciting opportunity for a traveler to join me in Svalbard this August to experience the Midnight Sun and enjoy coffee together. My perfect day would start with a visit to a walrus colony just across the fjord, surrounded by majestic glaciers. Afterward, we’ll stroll through town with Grim, capturing the iconic polar bear warning signs. The day would culminate with a lovely dinner at a historic restaurant in the village.

Plan Your Visit Wisely

Deepa: What’s the minimum amount of time a traveler should spend in Svalbard?

Cecilia: A minimum of five days is recommended. Weather can be unpredictable here, so it’s crucial to plan activities in advance. Summer is especially spectacular for fjord excursions where you might encounter whales and perhaps even a polar bear. Enjoying the serene views of the glaciers is one of my favorite experiences in Svalbard.

Svalbard Wildlife and Ethical Travel

Deepa: What should travelers know about polar bears?

Cecilia: Firstly, keep your expectations realistic. I’ve lived here for a while and haven’t seen a polar bear in two years! However, if you embark on a fjord trip, your chances of spotting wildlife increase significantly. It’s essential to appreciate all aspects of this amazing environment, not just the polar bears.

Deepa: How can visitors be responsible and ethical travelers?

Cecilia: Respect for nature is crucial. Many plants are protected, so do not pick flowers or disturb the fragile tundra. Take only photos and leave only footprints—this is vital to ensure the delicate ecosystem remains intact.
