The Perfect Long Weekend Guide to Savannah, Georgia

Perfect Weekend in Savannah, Georgia

For those of us in greater Atlanta, Savannah is our closest beach escape. It’s approximately a four-hour drive from my home, making it an ideal location for a weekend getaway.

I prefer to take a half day on Fridays to arrive in Savannah with ample time to check in and relax before dinner. On Sundays, I’m usually in no rush to leave, allowing me to maximize my time in this vibrant city.

Weekend Recommendations

Here are my suggestions to make the most of your weekend in Savannah:

  • When to arrive: I recommend starting your journey no later than mid-afternoon, around 2 PM. However, if you can, arriving Thursday night is even better!
  • Transportation from the airport: Opt for a rideshare to get into the city from the airport, as the bus service can take an hour or more.
  • Getting around: You’ll likely be walking most of your time here. For longer distances, like a trip to Tybee Island or south of Forsyth Park, consider taxis or rideshares.
  • Where to stay: Savannah offers a variety of accommodations, from charming inns to luxury hotels. My top choices include the retro-themed Thunderbird Inn, the JW Marriott Plant Riverside District with its stunning lobby, and the Alida Hotel, a tribute to historic preservation.
  • What to pack: Comfortable shoes are essential, especially for walking. A hat is advisable, particularly in summer, and I also recommend a folding fan for staying cool. Savannah has a laid-back vibe, so formal attire is usually not required unless specified by a restaurant.

Friday

Morning: Start your day with a delicious breakfast. Dottie’s Market offers a variety of artisan foods, but don’t miss their prepared dishes like the bagel BLT, which will keep you full for hours. If you prefer just coffee and a pastry, check out the Coffee Fox down the street.

The shops on Broughton St open around 10 AM, so once you’ve had your meal, explore local boutiques like Clockwork Skateshop, Nourish for organic bath products, and the vintage finds at Glory Days Vintage.

How to spend the day: Kick off your Savannah experience with a quick overview of the city by joining a walking tour. These tours typically operate at 9:30 AM and noon, allowing you to gain insights into the city’s history affordably.

After your tour, visit some of Savannah’s historic homes, many of which are museums showcasing how the previous residents lived. A must-see is the Juliette Gordon Low house and the Owens-Thomas House, which offers a glimpse into 19th-century life.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in one of Savannah’s famous squares, such as Chippewa Square, known from the movie Forrest Gump. You can grab supplies from Fancy Parker’s, which offers delicious fried chicken and sandwiches.

After lunch, make your way to City Market, a bustling area filled with shops and eateries. Don’t miss the American Prohibition Museum, which provides an entertaining look at this fascinating era.

Dinner: If there’s one restaurant to prioritize, it’s the Grey. With an award-winning menu that showcases regional culinary influences, it’s an unforgettable dining experience. Alternatively, for a casual atmosphere, try Crystal Beer Parlor, popular for its burgers and crab dip.

After dark: For an evening out, explore one of Savannah’s upscale cocktail bars like Artillery or Alley Cat Lounge for a more relaxed vibe.

Saturday

Morning: Begin your Saturday at the Forsyth Farmers Market in Forsyth Park, which opens at 9 AM. This market features local produce and prepared food vendors—grab a morning coffee and pastry before heading to Tybee Island.

How to spend the day: On your way to the beach, consider stopping for lunch at Finches Sandwiches & Sundries. Once at Tybee Island, relax by the beach or explore the historic pier. You could also hike the trails at Fort Pulaski or climb the Tybee Lighthouse for breathtaking views.

Dinner: For dinner, indulge in a seafood feast at Sea Wolf, which offers unique cocktails and a fun atmosphere or savor the casual vibe at The Crab Shack, where you can feast on shrimp and crab nestled amongst the trees.

After dark: Back in Savannah, if you have the energy, consider joining one of the after-hours ghost tours or visit the Original Pinkie Masters, a charming dive bar.

Sunday

Morning: On your final day, head to the Starland District for breakfast at Flora and Fauna, where you can enjoy biscuits and breakfast sandwiches. Alternatively, grab freshly baked bagels at Big Bon Bodega.

How to spend the day: This is a perfect time to explore the district’s various shops and breweries or take a moment to relax in one of the local cafes. When you’re back at the hotel, check out, and bid farewell to Savannah—until your next visit!
