Top 3 Must-Visit Destinations in Greece Recommended by Locals

For tourists, Greece delivers on all fronts.

You could linger on the stunning islands that seem straight out of a postcard, explore a rich tapestry of history woven into every landscape, and dine on Greek cuisine that is revered worldwide. There are countless activities and places to visit too, but sometimes you want to step away from the obvious and gain insight into local life.

From the sun-kissed, whitewashed beaches of southern Crete to the laid-back vibes of the west Cyclades, three local travel writers share their favorite vacation spots in Greece.

1. Serifos, West Cyclades

Based in Athens since 1996, Helen Iatrou’s preferred mode of island-hopping is sailing.

Why Serifos?

When summer arrives, my thoughts turn to that remote Dodecanese islet or my Northeastern Aegean ancestral home. However, one island I can’t resist is Serifos, located in the West Cyclades. It’s just a two-hour fast ferry ride from Piraeus. While villas have been sprouting across its forbidding, caramel-colored hillsides in recent years, Serifos still feels worlds apart from popular regional destinations like Mykonos and Santorini.

Must-do Activity

What I love most about this unperturbed isle is its 70-plus beaches, where high summer Meltemi winds temper the heat. With no sun loungers in sight, I prefer the shade of a nap-friendly tamarisk tree. The deep waters of pebbled Ganema and wild Karavi invigorate me to the core, while the secluded cove of Psili Ammos tempts with golden sands and aquamarine seas.

Serifos Tips

I usually stay in the port town of Livadi at family-owned boutique hotels. Restaurants and cafes are easily accessible, as is the atmospheric, whitewashed hilltop capital Hora, which is just a 12-minute drive away. Traditional kafenion serves viscous Greek coffee, while local eateries recreate classic dishes.

2. Rethymno’s Southern Coast, Crete

Vangelis Koronakis is a guidebook writer who can’t resist Cretan escapes.

Why Rethymno?

With Cretan roots, I have spent most summers on this beautiful island. The southern shores, particularly in Rethymno, bathed by the crystalline Libyan Sea, remain relatively untouched by mass tourism.

Must-do Activity

The area boasts more than 15 exceptional beaches, stretching from Frangokastello on the west to Agia Galini on the east. Preveli, the “palm beach,” is one of the most photographed in the country, with some quieter options like Amoudi and massive, wild Triopetra. A visit to the historic Preveli Monastery is also highly recommended.

Rethymno Tips

One of my favorite dining spots is a family taverna in the village of Sellia that offers superb local fare with stunning views. Renting a car is crucial for discovering the region’s beauty; Spili is an ideal base with access to various attractions.

3. Koufonisia

Alexis Averbuck is a writer and painter residing on the island of Hydra.

Why Koufonisia?

I love sailing the Cyclades on open-top ferries. When I cruised into Koufonisia, the clear water with hints of aquamarine made it seem as if the fishing caiques were floating in air over the white sand. The vibe here is casual and relaxed, perfect for unwinding.

Must-do Activity

Wander the main village, filled with tiny streets lined with boutiques and inviting eateries. Walking the entire island along rugged trails gives you access to natural pools and soft alabaster beaches, creating a magical experience.

Koufonisia Tips

If you’re able to indulge, stay at a hotel overlooking Pori Bay, then enjoy fresh-caught seafood for dinner while watching the sunset.
