Exploring the Beauty of Newport Beach, California with GoTravelDaily
Travel enthusiast Ann Douglas Lott shares her insights and tips for enjoying Newport Beach, one of California’s premier vacation destinations.
With a craving for a West Coast escape and a head start on my summer tan, landing in Newport Beach was incredibly refreshing. I was eager for some adventure, and nothing beats that feeling of being out on a boat under the sunny California skies. Having only known this area through popular shows, I was keen to discover the real Orange County.
Thanks to the convenient five-hour direct flight from JFK to SNA (John Wayne Airport), I avoided the chaos of LAX and reached my hotel within 25 minutes of landing—what a fantastic way to kick off a trip!
Accommodation: Where to Stay?
I stayed at the newly opened Pendry Newport Beach, which perfectly captures the essence of luxury. The rooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed, providing a peaceful retreat. The hotel features a sushi and steak restaurant, a stylish lobby bar, and even a cabaret, complementing its tranquil spa where I indulged in a magnificent massage. Moreover, the beachy pool deck offers ample lounge chairs for ultimate relaxation, and while it’s not directly on the beach, the soothing sounds of the Pacific Ocean are just minutes away.
Favorite Activity: Exploring State Parks
One of my favorite activities while visiting was exploring state parks. These areas are typically well-maintained and educational. Crystal Cove State Park is a must-visit, showcasing the Crystal Cove Conservancy’s efforts to restore historic beach cottages from the 1930s-1950s. Although it gets busy, the charm of these quaint cottages makes the trip worthwhile. Remember to check if you can book a stay in one of these delightful spaces.
Culinary Delights: Best Eats in Newport Beach
Newport Beach offers a plethora of culinary experiences. For fans of sweet treats, the iconic frozen bananas reminiscent of the Bluth family stand offers delightful options at locations like Sugar ‘n Spice and Dad’s Donut Shop. Additionally, the beignets at the Beachcomber Café are simply heavenly, served with whipped cream and maple syrup.
Seafood lovers will revel in the culinary scene, which includes highlights such as the sushi and bluefin tuna pizza at the on-site restaurant of the Pendry, as well as the delicious ravioli at JOEY and the seasonal gumbo special at Bluewater Grill.
Tourist Activities: Getting Close to Nature
A highly recommended activity is taking a whale and dolphin-watching tour. Experiencing these magnificent creatures up close is unforgettable. Ensure your tour is on a Zodiac boat for an intimate experience as you glide through the water. For a more relaxed outing, consider a Duffy boat cruise in the harbor for scenic views while enjoying available refreshments.
Packing Essentials for Newport Beach
Visiting in early May, I found it to be cooler than expected. Therefore, consider packing the following essentials:
- Your best beach outfits to match Newport’s luxurious vibe.
- A light jacket for cooler evenings.
- A swimsuit, of course.
- Sun protection: SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
