Top Local Getaways: NYC Staff Picks for Nearby Escapes

Getaway Destinations from NYC

“Where locals go” is our series featuring under-the-radar holiday destinations that are often overlooked by visitors but cherished by locals. In this edition, our NYC experts showcase their favorite holiday spots at home.

While those of us who live in New York City know there is no place like home, we also understand the need to escape the hustle and bustle. As summer arrives, locals tend to seek refuge in cooler, more relaxing destinations, avoiding the crowded city. Below are some beloved nearby escapes that New Yorkers return to year after year.

Martha’s Vineyard

An Idyllic NYC Getaway

Every New Yorker dreams about their go-to summer beach destination. Martha’s Vineyard is special for its unique charm: almost no chains, walkable towns with distinct personalities, and gorgeous beaches coupled with undeniably stunning pink sunsets. The best news? Delta and JetBlue often offer affordable direct flights from NYC if booked early enough.

Moreover, the seafood here is incredibly fresh. My favorite is the lobster roll from The Net Result in Vineyard Haven, perfect for a secluded sunset picnic at Lambert’s Cove Beach. Honorable mentions include delicious ice cream at The Scoop Shack in Edgartown and refreshing cocktails on Atlantic Restaurant’s waterfront deck.

This coming July, I’m planning a Midsommar-inspired garden dinner and beach-hopping adventures in Edgartown. For beach recommendations, South Beach provides fun crowds and big waves, while Lighthouse Beach offers a peaceful tanning spot.

For accommodation, consider charming inns or classic hotels. The Harbor View Hotel and The Charlotte Inn in Edgartown capture the classic Martha’s Vineyard feel.

The Catskills

For Hikers, Shoppers, and Foodies

The Catskills remains a cherished secret among NYC locals. Every town boasts unique charm, with enticing restaurants, trendy bars, and superb shopping. I love stopping by Subversive Malting + Brewing for their delicious smash burgers and innovative brews.

The postcard-perfect town of Hudson is perfect for vintage clothing and records, along with afternoon tea. For dining, Swoon in Hudson serves mouthwatering steak, while Silvia in Woodstock is known for its farm-to-table goodness.

Conveniently, the Catskills is easy to reach from NYC by car or Amtrak. Luxurious accommodations reinvent the cabin getaway concept, such as Hunter Lodge and The Maker Hotel, each providing stylish comfort and access to nature.

Shelter Island

The Hamptons Alternative
Brekke Fletcher, Senior Director of Content

Shelter Island, nestled between the North and South Forks of Long Island, offers a serene escape from city life. It’s a three-hour getaway that’s worth the journey and provides an easygoing atmosphere, ideal for those seeking peace and relaxation.

Although getting there may require planning, being on the island means enjoying a variety of accommodations, from rental houses to charming hotels like The Pridwin on Crescent Beach, which offers excellent amenities and ocean views.

Dining may be a little pricey, but you can enjoy something special at Marie Eifell or grab a casual breakfast at Eccentric Bagel. The Rams Head Inn provides a beautiful sunset with oysters and martinis, while Shipwreck Bar offers live music in a relaxed setting.

Lake George

An Outdoor Lover’s Paradise

Lake George, located in the stunning Adirondacks, is a newer addition to my summer traditions, but it has quickly captured my heart. With its expansive lake and lush tree-lined shores, this destination embodies the essence of a wholesome, rustic getaway.

The town is filled with fun activities—enjoy a tiki boat cruise, play miniature golf at Pirate’s Cove, or simply relax on Million Dollar Beach. Although not known for fine dining, you can grab a hearty meal at Gaslight or the Adirondack Pub and Brewery.

The Lodges at Cresthaven are family-friendly and offer lovely amenities, while Blue Lagoon Resort is also a comfortable lakeside option, ensuring a delightful stay for lake enthusiasts.

Washington, DC

A Quaint Escape for City Lovers
Ann Douglas Lott, Associate Editor

For those who crave a different pace while still enjoying a vibrant city experience, Washington, DC, feels remarkably quaint compared to NYC. The city can be reached via Amtrak in about 3.5 hours, making it an easy getaway.

Here, you can enjoy numerous free activities, such as visiting the Smithsonian museums, exploring neighborhoods like Georgetown, and wandering through beautiful parks. Dining options abound, from Balkan cuisine at Ambar to classic brunch at Kramers Bookstore. With a plethora of museums and delicious eateries, DC offers an engaging mix of history and culture.

In conclusion, these getaway destinations provide exciting options for those looking to escape the city. Whether it’s the scenic beaches of Martha’s Vineyard or the rustic charm of Lake George, New Yorkers have no shortage of beloved escapes to explore.
