Exploring 5 Must-Visit Local Shops in Philadelphia: Unique Eats and Vintage Finds

Top Independent Shops in Philadelphia

As a born and raised Pennsylvanian, I’ve always thought of Philadelphia, or Philly, as a low-key version of New York City. The cost of living is less expensive, but you get similar perks: diversity, numerous cuisines, solid public transportation, a reasonable amount of green space, waterfront views, strong neighborhood communities, world-class museums, and nationwide recognition. This city is where the Constitution of the United States was written – the birthplace of a whole country!

It would be impossible to name the best five independent shops here because, much like NYC, there’s too much ground to cover. Therefore, I narrowed my scope to places within walking distance of Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, as history is a significant reason why Philly made the list for top cities to visit in 2024.

Best for Souvenirs: OMOI

Japanese-inspired art, stationary, bags, ceramics and accessories

OMOI is a Japanese-inspired stationery and lifestyle goods shop whose name loosely translates to “thoughtful” – representative of the care its team takes to select its imported products. This place is irresistible to many, with an extensive collection of aesthetically pleasing notebooks, planners, and bullet journals. Additionally, it’s the perfect spot to find cards for birthdays and holidays.

Beyond office supplies, OMOI also sells artsy books, specialty skincare, and various accessories and jewelry. Almost all products are visually appealing, making them a delight to display on any shelf.

Best for Art: Eye’s Gallery

Handmade artwork and trinkets

Eye’s Gallery is bursting with international art encompassing various disciplines: wall art, figurines, fashion, jewelry, and even instruments. You’ll find work from Africa, India, South America, Tibet, Turkey, and more. The gallery, founded in 1968 by Isaiah and Julia Zagar, provides a larger market for global folk art.

Visiting this gallery is an opportunity to appreciate artistry and learn about the history of the pieces on display. Each staff member is knowledgeable about the artists and the stories behind their works, so don’t hesitate to ask for more details.

Shopaholics rejoice, because at Philly AIDS Thrift, you can feel good about your purchases. This nonprofit distributes its sales proceeds to local organizations fighting against HIV and AIDS. The shop offers an array of items to sift through, like designer clothes, furniture, fine china, and electronics.

The main store is organized by category, and inventory is displayed on multiple floors. If you’re willing to search, you might discover incredible bargains in the dollar bins.

Best for Punk-Rock Fashion: Crash Bang Boom

Punk-style fashion on display in Crash Bang Boom

Crash Bang Boom’s neon green, zebra-printed storefront is hard to miss. Here, you’ll discover a mix of punk-rock and goth fashion, from chunky leather boots to an impressive collection of band T-shirts. The selection is curated by co-owners Rob Windfelder and Stefanie Jolles, who have a deep connection with the music scene.

Don’t let the all-black clothing intimidate you; the friendly staff is always up for a chat about music and events happening nearby. Be sure to check out the back room’s consignment section, which matches the front’s thoughtful curation.

Best for Food: Reading Terminal Market

Cookies, vegetables and jarred preserves on display in Reading Market

Reading Terminal Market opened in 1893 to bring nearby farmers, fishers, and traditional merchants together. Today, it’s a bustling hub of eateries, fusion cuisine, and sweet treats. With over 80 vendors, you can find everything from cheesesteaks and Pennsylvania Dutch classics to sushi and vegan options. Prepare to be overwhelmed by choices, but rest assured, you can’t go wrong – especially if you grab a warm cookie at Famous 4th Street Cookie Company before leaving!

Additionally, the market has a selection of gift stalls, such as Pennsylvania General Store for local trinkets and Bee Natural for candles. For unique decor, check out Contessa’s French Linens and Little Marrakesh Bazaar, featuring items sourced from France and Morocco, respectively.
