Today marks the 52nd annual Earth Day, and as we celebrate over five decades of the global environmental movement, responsible travel is at the forefront of our minds.
At GoTravelDaily, we are passionate about the world around us. As we explore, we strive to be mindful of the impact our travel has on the planet. Therefore, in honor of Earth Day 2022, we are sharing some of our top sustainable travel tips from our team of dedicated travelers.

I have become more conscious of flying in recent times. Previously, I took advantage of low-cost airlines’ cheap weekend flights and often ventured off for last-minute breaks to cities in Europe. Even though traveling is back on the table, I now avoid flying somewhere just for a few days. Instead, I plan for longer, more meaningful trips when I must fly, maximizing my stay and exploring multiple destinations.

Having grown up backpacking, I carry the “leave no trace” mindset on each adventure. I often bring along a spare bag to collect any trash I find, particularly when planning a beach day.

Limit the number of “travel-sized” items by using refillable containers. You don’t need to purchase new ones; instead, reuse or refill old containers or repurpose household items like contact lens cases. Additionally, I always pack a reusable tote to minimize plastic waste during shopping trips, and I make it a point to support local artists when buying souvenirs.

Opt for travel during the off-season. Many popular locations suffer from overcrowding, which leads to pollution and environmental degradation. Visiting during off-peak times helps alleviate this strain and offers a more unique, intimate experience of the area.

Often, adopting a slower pace is more sustainable and can also be a rewarding change. For instance, consider leaving the car behind for a multi-day bicycle journey, or explore islands in Greece via a wind-powered sailboat instead of a cruise ship. Slowing down allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience instead of rushing through a list of sights.

I’ve made a conscious choice to stop buying bottled water in airports. Previously, I’d dispose of half-full water bottles before security and buy new ones afterward. Now, by keeping a reusable water bottle in my carry-on and refilling it after passing through security, I help reduce plastic waste significantly—and save money.

I take my refillable water bottle and coffee mug everywhere, including my daily commute. I advocate for hotels and airlines to eliminate plastic water bottles and paper cups, encouraging them to provide filtered water stations and discounts for those who use their own containers.

While fresh sheets and towels in hotels seem like a luxury, they are often unnecessary. By forgoing daily changes, I can significantly reduce the hotel’s water and energy consumption. I communicate my preference for minimal laundry during my stays to the hotel staff.

I am passionate about discovering adventures close to home. Exploring local areas can significantly limit travel’s environmental impact while deepening my appreciation for my community. Should I grow fond of a local spot, I can easily revisit again.
