Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations Across the USA
As memories of summer fade, September brings another reason to celebrate: Hispanic Heritage Month.
Each year, from September 15 to October 15, Americans celebrate the contributions of Americans of Latino descent to the culture, artistry, and identity of the country. What began as a week-long commemoration in 1968 has expanded into a 30-day celebration, spotlighting families and ancestors from South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Spain, and Mexico. This month serves as an opportunity to acknowledge the impact of their cultures on American life.
Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, coinciding with the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Subsequently, Mexico’s Independence Day follows on September 16, and Chile’s on September 18. Across the US, particularly within Hispanic communities, a vast number of events and celebrations take place throughout the month. Here are some highlights.
GALA Hispanic Theatre, Washington, DC
Since its founding in 1976, GALA has thrived in Washington, DC, putting on over 200 productions, from contemporary Latin American plays to original musicals and more. Moreover, GALA offers a program for younger audiences, ensuring that educational opportunities are accessible through affordable ticket prices and post-performance discussions.
This September, the theatre presents Baño de luna (Bathing in Moonlight), a play by Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz, delving into the struggle between faith and love.
Little Havana, Miami
For a solid education on a variety of Latin cultures, a trip to Miami is essential. If you’re hoping to immerse yourself in Cuban culture, Little Havana is a vibrant neighborhood brimming with Cuban attractions, including the Cubaocho Museum and Maximo Gomez (Domino) Park.

National Hispanic Cultural Center, Albuquerque
Occupying one of New Mexico’s most architecturally imaginative buildings, this institution is dedicated to the preservation and advancement of Hispanic culture and arts. It features three galleries utilized for fine arts exhibitions, performances, and salsa classes.
Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, CA
