Where Locals Go: Discover Thailand’s Hidden Gems

Our Where Locals Go series features under-the-radar holiday destinations that are often overlooked by visitors but cherished by locals. Here, we ask three experts on Thailand for their top picks.

Phatthalung: A Pink Paradise in Southern Thailand

Chawadee Nualkhair is a food writer based in Bangkok

Sleepy Phatthalung is not the first destination people think of for a holiday in southern Thailand. However, during the pandemic, many found joy in exploring this hidden gem. My family and I decided to leave Bangkok for a road trip, veering away from the usual hotspots like Phuket and Krabi. We have since visited twice; my husband was enchanted by the blooming water lilies, while I delighted in the fresh fried fish meals. The “off-the-beaten-track” experience in Phatthalung is truly refreshing, where fishermen cast their giant nets each morning amidst the tranquil backdrop of nature.

Phatthalung is landlocked, bordered by Songkhla Lake, which is the largest lake in Thailand, stretching 80 meters and adorned with white and purple blooms in the early morning hours. Officially known as “Thale Noi,” this protected area is home to the largest water lotus “sea” in southern Thailand, hosting around 287 species of waterfowl.

Nearby, early risers can enjoy stunning sunrises at the Kuan Dancing Bird Viewpoint, complete with a cozy coffee shop for a caffeine boost. The seafood here is incredibly fresh, highlighted by local favorites such as tom yum soup and baer fish at Bang Charm Restaurant. For a unique local experience, visit Canal Village in Pakpra for comfortable accommodations and traditional breakfasts.

Discover Khao Lak: Boating, Hiking, and Local Markets

Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj is a guidebook author based in Bangkok.

Living in the bustling city of Bangkok, I often find myself yearning for the serenity of less crowded destinations. Khao Lak, a tranquil area with a series of quaint villages, has captured my heart. This charming coastal retreat gained popularity among residents during the pandemic, with many opening cafes and hostels.

This location offers year-round activities, from diving in the high season to surfing during monsoon months. A must-do is a boat trip to the stunning Similan Islands for snorkeling, where the clear waters offer incredible views of marine life.

A highlight in Khao Lak is Phan Teh Rice Noodle, accessible via a short hike that leads to delightful dining alongside a scenic canal and waterfall. The Place Khao-lak is another hidden gem, a local hotspot for excellent coffee and socializing with the community. For accommodations, the Khaolak Merlin resort provides a peaceful retreat surrounded by wildlife and nature.

Ao Yon Beach: A Secluded Paradise

Amy Bensema is a Phuket-based copywriter who enjoys getting off the beaten track.

Living in Phuket offers an array of beautiful yet busy beaches, but for tranquility, I often escape to Ao Yon Beach. Tucked away near Cape Panwa, Ao Yon Beach is relatively unknown and cherished by locals, providing a serene alternative to the crowded tourist spots.

Surrounded by coconut palms and the stunning turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea, Ao Yon is an ideal swimming destination year-round. The authentic local atmosphere, combined with the absence of commercial beach facilities, offers a unique escape.

Indulge in fresh seafood at the beachfront cafe, Flamingo Phuket, or enjoy a sunset dinner at The Cove Phuket’s inviting ambiance. If you plan to stay in the neighborhood, having your own transportation is essential as public transport options are scarce. The beach requires a short stroll from where you can park your vehicle, however, the effort is well worth it.
